Daredevil: The List

Four scans from Dark Reign: The List: Daredevil #1 (that's a mouthful of short words), as Daredevil comes face to face with Osborn's new world order.

As seen in the preview, a black-clad Hand ninja murders (well, might be too strong a word; intervenes lethally to stop them from executing an innocent man) some crooked cops and their judge boss, prompting Norman to send Bullseye and a small army of HAMMER agents up against Daredevil and his new Hand minions. Bullseye flees, and Daredevil pursues, intending to take him on mano-a-mano, as per usual:

I take that this bit is a reference to the fact that Hell's Kitchen in the real world isn't really Hell's Kitchen anymore, with the massive influx of moneyed types over the last few years. The comics (understandably) haven't caught up to that.

DD and Bullseye land on the roof, and Daredevil wonders exactly what is going to make this different from all the other times they've fought and he's beaten him?

The entire building is leveled, killing 107 people. Admirable synergy on the part of all aspects of Osborn's empire, at least.

"We send a message."

Elsewhere, the black-clad ninja from the opening is shown departing the scene. Said ninja heads back to an office tower, where it turns out the instigator of this whole chain of events is...

Trust him, Maki. He's been around long enough to know that even if you see a body, it's still 50/50 at best.

In a world where a convicted psycho like Osborn can be handed control of Not!S.H.I.E.L.D in the first place, where a supervillan can blow up a school full of innocent children and the entire world spends more time and energy blaming the heroes on the scene rather than the hopped-up lunatic that blew them up, and where a mutant who sweats yogurt is considered on the same threat level an al-Qaeda member...

With depressing ease.

	So in blowing up an building full of innocents to provoke a reaction from the hero, we have The List borrowing from Devin Grayson's "Blockbusters vendetta agains Dick Grayson" run, which was borrowing (apparently coincidentally) from Daredevil's "Born Again" This is getting terribly circular. 	Ahem, I believe she killed her two kids. He was already ready to take the Hand's leadership last issue; seemingly he felt killing Lord Hiroshi, the ninja-lord overseeing the whole thing, was enough. 	So, wait, freaking Bullseye is appearing in public, in NYC, on top of a building already surrounded by NYPD? Given Bullseye's reputation in New York, how is every cop that sees him not shooting to kill with no warning? Is he even officially pardoned, or still a wanted fugitive in the state? 	They wouldn't have a shot from where they are, given how high the building is and their not being equipped for sniper operations. Bullseye's still a fugitive; the fact that's posing as Hawkeye is a state secret (hence, I imagine, why he's dressed up in his old outfit to commit this act of supervillainy). 	Oh, so they're going to try to claim that Daredevil pressed the detonation button, or unaffiliated with the government Bullseye? That makes more sense than Osborn not being called on the carpet for ordering it done, I guess. Except, wasn't Bullseye visible in his own costume fighting the Secret Invasion in DC? He was, I believe, though a lot of other villains were there too (the Hood's men) so that wouldn't, in itself, necessarily be a problem. Diggle's recent miniseries focussing on Bullseye-as-Hawkeye was all about him being stressed by having to hide who he is, and covering up when some people find out.

So, yeah, there's not, so far as I know, any publicly-known connection between Norman and Bullseye.

	The hero/villain vibe got thrown out for a larger native/invader mash-up during the Central Park battle, so Bullseye and etc probably got a media handwave for the incident, if not a pardon. (Reply to this) (Parent)

I'm not sure the e-mail I sent Diggle via Marvel will reach him, so I'll say it here...isn't it odd that Daredevil's leadership of the Hand includes as his lieutenant the Black Tarantula...former supreme leader of the Teue Believers, the Hand's bitter religious rivals, who have disappeared largely because their name is a trademark of Stan Lee?

At the very least, it should be Carlos telling Matt strategies, not the reverse...

I personally think these "List" one-shots should have been in the main titles, since they're not really self-contained stories. In this case it's by the new writer for Daredevil, who's said that it bridges the gap between the ending of Brubaker's run and the beginning of Diggles'. So why not make it Daredevil #601?

Still, this looks good and I'll probably give Diggle a shot.

	They want to give the titles some publicity, presumably. And I think the point of these stories is to set up new plot points for the ongoings (they're being advertised as if the events in them will matter, after all). (Reply to this) (Parent)
