Oh, thanks for posting!

Oh, oh! Partner! Not rivals! Surrogate son! I was just reading a similar but not exact storyline in...I think it was a Batman issue with early Tim.

Who wrote this Superfan1?

I believe they're actually releasing this story and the others to do with Jason Todd's death and Tim Drake becoming Robin pretty soon. Hardcover.

It's on my list of books to buy.

...if Cry for Justice were all about Tim Drake's tears and feelings I would've bought it.

Been a long time since I read this. Jeez Tim was a Nightwing fanboy from the start. Oh, and Harvey what on earth are you wearing? Granted it's not as bad as the current Bat costume he's in but still. More of a BTAS or Sale/TDK look please?

That's pretty much his original look, really - in his first appearances, he wore a half orange, half purple plaid suit, just like here. The only difference was that his shirt wasn't divided, and his tie was half white, half black, not half green, half purple.

"And no matter how much anybody may want it...You can't bring back the dead"

Oh, Dick, if you only knew. If you only knew.

Also, interesting how Wayne Manor has changed shape over the years. Sometimes it looks like a less spooky version of the Addams Family Mansion, sometimes it looks like a Beverly Hill Estate (the Loeb/Sale books), sometimes it looks like its present shape of a byzantine castle complete with turrets and sometimes - like here - it looks like a quaint English manor house.

It's been destroyed and rebuilt at least twice that I know of: In the Gotham Earthquake, and in an early issue of the Harley Quinn series, in a three-way fight between Harley, the Riddler, and Big Barda.

Well, a little bit stalky and obsessive, but in a caring, starstruck kind of a way, rather than unhealthy obsessing sort of a way.

What's sad is that Tim hero-worshipping Dick like that and being all "wow, he's the greatest!" almost seems too innocent a scenario to be seen in comics today, you know? Example: Damian.

It's also interesting how reading this, it seems like in some ways Tim comes from our world, watching Batman and Robin and knowing their secrets, but then he walks right into the their story and starts playing a part in it. I can really see how he would be a Robin that kids could latch onto and relate to, far more than Jason Todd at the time, because of that aspect of his character. Gary Stu or not, there are a lot of Tim Drake fans out there.

"--I believe Master Bruce is almost as obsessive about family as he is about preventing crime."

And that, Alfred, is why you are the Goddamned Alfred. I don't think I've ever come across it put just like that, but it's very true. The difference being, of course, that Bruce doesn't acknowledge or admit the family aspect as openly as he does crime.

Great post!

Well, I think that's... yeah, but only because, in a way, it's a change in upping the ante... for example, Miller and Morrison are trying to outdo each other, maybe? To the extreme!

Absolutely. Honestly, it seems like part of what makes Dick and Tim such a great pair is they're kind of two meta-comics readers from different times. Dick is the uber-comic-reading-boy of 1940 who's well-rounded and sporty (good at school but also very into having good clean fun) and Tim is the uber-comic-reading-boy of the 90s--he's got all the information, knows how the story should go, with geeky interests as well. That they can be such close friends is adorable.

And yes, as usual Alfred sees all.

Yeah, 'cuz apparently when they do that today, people hate it. Example: Chris Kent before he was aged.

...God, I hate comics (and some of their fans) sooo much right now.

Hello, there wee!Timmy, my love.

This is the story that got me into comics. I love all Robins, but Tim Drake will always be my personal favourite.

Yeah.

Plus the class issues aren't helping. Or the 'you owe him for raising you!' I guess we can put that as 'Tim's parent issues are showing', but it's still rather unpleasant to read.

Tim is speaking from ignorance there, rather than obnoxiousness. He knows ABOUT Dick and Bruce, but doesn't know THEM yet.

That's debatable, I think. We don't know exactly how much stalking Tim has done in the past four years. He obviously knows them well enough to know that 'Batman needs a Robin', and his first instinct is to get Dick back rather than stepping himself to take on that role.

I agree that it's one more rationalization for his comment, but it doesn't make me find him any more sympathetic. Then again, I do have Tim issues, and it's the first story in which he really appears, so there's bound to be a certain level of rampant obnoxiousness. (Steph didn't suffer from it because she wasn't slated to become Robin and I don't mind Jason because I find his tough attitude hilarious, but Cass' first appearance could have rubbed people the wrong way either.)

It's not really a rationalisation, it's explicit in the charcter, Tim never wanted to be Robin and when he took on the role it was out.

He knew Batman needed a Robin because he'd seen in the news how Batman acted when he had a Robin, and how out of control he'd become after Jason's death.

With Jason gone that left only, in Tim's mind, Dick as a possible Robin and that's the path he rather single mindedly employed until the first time he put the costume on.

And at the same time, though he knew the public perceptions, he didn't know the real dynamics between Dick and Bruce as people.

It's really a fascinating line, though. I mean, it's true that Tim can't know their real dynamic, but the fact that he looks at what he does know and puts together Dick just now having a chance to "pay back" Bruce for raising him all those years...there is a lot of unexamined stuff in that simple statement. Really, what Tim is saying here probably is the public perception--perhaps especially the upper class part of the public.

Heh, love Dick as the clown. I have a page from that issue, but he's out of the clown makeup. :(

Oh, this story did lead to this nice trading card, with Phil Jimenez proving that he's the only one to come close Perez' insane levels of detail.

Something about the way Dick is standing, it's like he's telling Tim "Sorry kid, but my package is WAY to big to fit into that costume anymore. See? *hipthrust*"
