Batman Uses a Gun!

Chris Sims wrote a up True Bromance: Eleven Great Man-Crushes in Comics at ComicsAlliance.com. (It also includes a link to an amusing review of World's Finest #289--Superman and Batman Spend the Night Together) here: http://the-isb.blogspot.com/2005/11/where-they-went-wrong-superman-and.html) Also, the list includes Boostle.

My favorite line: In today's Post-Frank-Miller DC Universe, the World's Finest Superheroes have a pretty adversarial relationship that thrives on the fact that people will never, ever get tired of a guy who can move at the speed of light and shoot death rays from his eyes standing around like an idiot while Batman punches him in the face with Lex Luthor's class ring.

Personally, I prefer this one ( http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/126181.html) to WF #289, but here's another possible contender:

(From-The Trust, by Chip Kidd and Alex Ross)

Just wanted to add some Bruce and Hal and Barry and Ollie:

And some Dick and Roy:

Dick runs into some problems in the cafeteria...

Am I wrong in thinking Ollie really isn't that concerned about secret identities and stuff? Especially given Ollie and Bruce have been seen hanging out together and, well, that beard and tiny mask. Which makes it funny, and him even more of a dick, that he was the most self-righteous defender of the mindwipes in IDENTITY CRISIS(despite also having been against the one they did to Light).

I don't see HOW he can be concerned with secret identities with that beard. I just don't!

Awww. That first scan with Superman and Batman gave me the warm fuzzies. That's the only time Bruce should have ever used a gun, not some stupid god-killing thing with Darkseid...*mumblegrumble*

Isn't Dick the monogamist though, and Roy the player?

I mean, everybody likes Dick, but he stays pretty true. I'm not sure if Roy does or doesn't, actually. Does he?

Thanks!

I know the Hal, Barry and Bruce one is I'm guessing pre-COIE (and so no longer in continuity) but it's panels like that that make Hal's "I never liked Bruce" stuff in "Cry for Justice" suck. The thing is that for Identity Crisis (despite the fact it blows) and it's ret-conned mind-wipe to really have dramatic effect (as every DC writer seems to want it to these days) the JLA folks who did it had to have a close relationship with Bruce. So when they mind-wiped him the actually felt the extra guilt of doing it to someone they were friends (not just fellow adventurers) with. That was the whole point of the JLA "Crisis of Conscience" stoy by Geoff Johns following Identity Crisis.

Except with the invention of the Bat-Dick the only close friendship he has (really close I mean) outside of the Batcrew is with Superman. Even Diana is not that close to him (though Dini did try to re-establish the Zatanna/Bruce childhood friendship).

In pre-Crisis comics it would be no big deal for "Bruce Wayne" to hang out with his friends but in the last decade the real "Bruce Wayne" seems to have no friends (he explicitly would not come to GA's bachelor party like the others). Batman will work with the JLA but "Bruce" will usually pretend he doesn't know them (which has become a running joke with Clark) even when in civilian clothes. I know Identity Crisis is supposed to explain his paranoia and his closing himself off from the others, but it doesn't explain every story (like Black Canary seemingly not knowing who Bruce Wayne really is during the Murderer/Fugitive storyline). Back in the 60s and 70s, for all the camp and bad fashions, the DC JLA really did seem like real friends - with and without the mask. Nowadays they are only when the story seems to call for it (like Blackest Night).

Thing is that Johns recently, explicitly, had Hal reminiscing about how, despite their conflicts, he and Bruce WERE friends.

As for CRY FOR JUSTICE, it sucks anyway. It's SO arch and SO serious and SO grimdark it actually makes me laugh out loud. But then, apart from STARMAN, to me James Robinson always represented the point in the "dark age" where it becomes self-parody. Not just with superheroes; WITCHCRAFT, despite its excellent artists, reads like someone trying to parody Neil Gaiman.(and the second one is just unreadable crap) Remember, this is the man who took the money to ruin LOEG. Someone British, in comics, not some Hollywood hack but someone who should know better. Sorry, no mercy. Robinson sucks.

They've made it clear that Bruce never liked Hal, they're just unclear as to exactly why. John said "Hal was only one who never bought what you're selling." Meaning Hal, being "without fear," didn't see Batman as anything other than a man in a bat costume. Flashbacks from BLACKEST NIGHT show Hal's light-based powers clashing with Batman's "hide in shadows" ability. Or it could be as simple as Bruce being annoyed Hal got his powers literally handed to him by a dying alien.

IMHO, a lot of "Batman as a jerk" comes from Batman figuring "None of the good guys like me, so I just won't like them back." And from there is a short path to "I hate myself and the world and everyone in it!"

Yes, the Hal, Barry and Bruce make (IMO) the Hal statements in Cry for Justice... less good. But I don't care for Cry for Justice, myself.

And you're right, there's no one way to explain every story. It's really a kind of big mess, with every writer using Batman in different ways. I actually think he gets used more often than Superman and I hate the most when he's the big bad Daddy Batman or whatever who the underling hero has to prove himself to or be dismissed by. I'm not saying that always happens in the stories you're mentioning but I do think it happens a lot and it's very much not my favorite story situation.

Anyone have scans from the big fight at the Restaraunt at the end of time, when Kingdom Come and current versions of the Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Kingdom Come children battle Gog? Didn't Bruce use particle weapons (and the Phantom Zone projector) against Gog?

Gil Kane. "In the future, all faces will be seen from below, dear boy."

Also: notice--Barry had no crew cut. In fact, he didn't have it from the 1970s, at least, onward; the Barry I grew up with looked like this. Again, then why the hell does he come back now and have one?

Happy Days tangent alert

I just have to say it. Everybody always looks so good in the clothes from that era, even when they also look funny. Love the older bachelors on the town, and then their younger wards strolling around the college campus.

And I agree about the flirting comments above. The difference is that Roy is the self-conscious player, openly talking about trying to get different women, or going after them. Dick is a great contrast to him because he's either oblivious and polite and genuinely friendly (which women love) or if he really likes the girl he's earnest and open about it, which is also adorable.

If they were on Happy Days, Dick is definitely Ritchie where Roy is Potsie. (Yes, I know Roy wanted me to say Fonzie, but he's Potsie-Potsie was originally intended to be Ritchie's more worldly friend before Fonzie took off. If anybody was Fonzie, it would be Bruce.)

Man, all these 70s comics are so pretty.

It's interesting how at Ollie asking for a favour, Bruce's automatic response is "of course!" He used to be nice like that, I guess. Now he'd give Ollie way more grief before helping him.

And I like that "if Canary ever kicked you out, you'd join a monastery" remark.
