Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:char: brother blood, char: raven/rachel roth, char: robin/nightwing/dick grayson, char: starfire/koriand'r, char: wonder girl/troia/donna troy, creator: george perez, creator: marv wolfman, group: teen titans, in-joke: bondage, publisher: dc comics, title: teen titans

Well, if we can get Wonder Girl making her O face, we can have Robin doing what he does best. (IMHO)
This was one of the more popular posts I made on SD_1.0 two years ago, and whilst I apologise I don't have anything new to post at the moment, since we're on a New Teen Titans kink kick, time for some equal opportunity perving. (Now with added cover fun!)

As requested, the covers for the story in question... I include the cover for 21 (though everything I post is from 22) because you get another fine example of equal opportunity groping, and sweet Lord, didn't Dick always looks so darned cute when he was all vulnerable?

George Perez has been known to draw many a dazzling damsel, and sometimes in scantily clad distress, but clearly felt it was payback time in New Teen Titans 22 in 1982 when it was the ever popular Dick Grayson's turn to go through a bit of stripping and chaining up. And God bless him for it!

The story so far; infiltrating the evil cult leader Brother Bloods "Church of Blood" after Cyborg's first girlfriend was killed trying to escape them, the Titans have faced off against Brother Blood himself, and been defeated. Here he sorts through his captives, and decides he want's to take "the non-powered one, the boy called Robin" away for some schemes of his own. Clearly it's the exposed chest which convinces him! Also note that Brother Blood is strong enough to casually pick Robin up by the utility belt without even straining, and ensures that he takes personal responsibility for transporting the Teen Wonder (Wouldn't we all)

After a quick chat with a corrupt politician Blood decides to pay a visit to his personal project... The pictures on the wall mean nothing to him, but clearly brightly clad acrobats do... make of that what you will! :)

And his Confessor has gone to some length to make sure that he's manacled his prisoner properly and is displaying enough captive Robin to keep the boss (and us) happy.

Note that the "electronic lash" doesn't leave a mark on the skin, but does remove clothing... Whatever he spent on R&D on that thing was more than worth it! Meanwhile, back at Titans Tower, the Titans LESS suited to undercover work (being orange, green and shiny silver) debate tactics

Things are stepping up in the "Let's torture Robin stakes" in Blood's Confessional ! I confess that reading this for the first time my first thought was "Boy, he's got nice teeth!".. well, actually my first thought was either "Woof! or whatever the equivalent of "SQUEEEEE!" was back then... Note the exposed chest, the tattered costume, the nicely toned... well, darn near EVERYTHING and if profuse sweating is remotely a turn on, then your luck's in!

I'm also not sure that it's physically possible to be in the position Dick is in in the last panel, but he IS the bendy Robin...

Most chilling bit is the fact that after torturing the worlds best looking sidekick and failing to break his spirit, Brother Blood actually forgives the Confessor because he'd tried his best, and whatever information Robin had wasn't THAT important. That's one cold evil dude!

Now, just remember that for the rest of the issue, Robin is running around wearing only his trunks, pixie boots, gloves and mask. That alone should give you the warm fuzzies... Being dunked into a dungeon full of slime isn't exactly glamorous but just pretend that it's green bath foam or something and it becomes a lot more appealling as a concept.

So after being tortured and dumped into a cellar with his unconscious friends and a killer giant spider, we see that NOTHING stops our Teen Wonder, who proceeds to go into an acrobatic routine to save them, and plants a drop kick into the beasties eye!

As you read the next page just remember; The wonderful thing about Robin's is Robin's are wonderful things! Their tops are made out of rubber, their bottoms are.... (sorry where was I, I got distracted by the notion of Robin's bottom for a moment)! They're bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy! (And they're probably fun too, but I was watching his flying leaps) He even takes the time to get close to Wonder Girl's rear!

And finally, as he thinks his chips are down, his last thoughts are going to be of Bruce... Awwwww! (Please note he also cuddles Raven a lot closer in his last seconds, the man has taste, and the spider looks like it's about to find out what flavour!)

Yeah Dick, you go and arouse Wallace... Honestly, subtext has just pole-vaulted over the text and into the face of the reader shouting "I'm the slashy subtext la-la-la!" at the top of it's little lungs

Luckily Raven saves Dick and the others, and all ends, not happily, as Blood escapes and makes the Titans look bad in the process, but at least with the still near-naked Robin rejoining his friends....

Ohhh, the first Brother Blood story. This is the storyline that got me to finally pick up the book (and love it and go back and get them all) as a young 'un. I think it was that I'd been a ToD(and Night Force) fan as a younger kid(that's right, my parents let me read ToD before I was even ten) and this story brought it into that scary-religious-cult thing Wolfman does so well. In this story he showed me just how many chances he was really taking with this series and I was hooked.

And this BB? AWESOME costume.

You gotta love that final directive from Raven, though. I mean, seriously. Honestly hun, if Wallace isn't already aroused watching that display from Dick, there's not a lot more we could do for him.

And Blood makes a classic villain mistake; he assumes Robin is the weak link just because he's the only one without powers.

Trying to interrogate a veteran of the Bat Family. You'd have better luck trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip. A petrified turnip.

Indeed, but it has to be said that this was one of the first real times that Dick proved he had that level of will and awesomeness within him. In 1982 he was still Robin, and always viewed as Batman's junior partner when he appeared in Batman titles, a lighter, more cheerful hero than Batman perhaps, and whilst no slouch, still a (comparative) lightweight.

Wolfman and Perez were setting the groundwork here for him achieving the levels of respect he now has.

I question the logic that has a man who can transform into a cockroach warming the bench on a stealth mission.

(I do not, of course, question the logic of half-naked Robins. That I think stands quite well.)

Fair point on the former, thought I think it used to be that taking large forms required more of his shapeshifting "power reserves", but keeping small forms required more continued concentration, not ideal for continued infiltration.

man who can transform into a cockroach

You know, it always squicks me out when people turn into bugs in fiction. Not because they're bugs, but because of the possibility of them getting squished. I'll be honest, I'll stomp a bug when I see it unless I think it's pretty. I think most other people do too. So what happens when a shapeshifter is scurrying along as a bug and someone sees them? What a horrible way to go...*shudder*

Incidentally, that always bugged me about the Harry Potter books. Rita Skeeter turns into a beetle...

2) Well, it IS Gar.

Is it sad that the first thing I noticed was 'hey, only the green elements of the costume (sans sleeves) are left! Neat!'? It took me a minute to go 'woah, half-naked Robin!' I think something must be wrong with me...

This story really is almost an origin story for Older!Dick. We've got his acrobatics being not just fun but life-saving, his unbreakable will, that he's the badass normal amongst powered-folk, and his great abilities as a sex object.

You would know--was this the first time where his body was used to such advantage? I know it wasn't the last.

See, THIS is why Perez is entitled to objectify women in his art as much as he damn well wants, because unlike any other artist I can think of in this field, HE DOES IT JUST AS MUCH TO THE MEN, and even as a straight guy, I fucking LOVE him for it. :)

In the "I'm sorry Raven/I'm sorry Bruce" panel, I am distracted because it looks like Raven is licking Dick's neck. Although there is plenty else to be distracted by in this comic.

It is such a good Dick story, though. And not just because of his tattered costume, but that helps.

It suddenly occurs to me that I don't know whether or not New Teen Titans has ever been collected in trades. I would buy the hell out of that.

Always nice to see my fav NTT issue! One of my favorite parts (less favorite than shirtless Dick of course...) is the page before where Dick gets blasted and Donna shouts "If Robin's dead I'll kill you!" I love Dick/Donna...

But did they ever reveal what information Brother Blood was trying to get out of Dick?

I think it's hilarious that Brother Blood doesn't even think for a second about removing Robin's mask. In fact, villains never seem to think of that and he has the smallest and easiest disguise to remove in the DCU. I would include Ollie but I think he just has the mask because he thinks it's cool, because with that beard he ain't hidin' NOTHING.

Thanks for posting one of my favourite scenes ever. Of course the half-naked-Robin pretty art is one main reason, but I also enjoyed the dialogues and narrator's text. :) Note where the confessor on the 2nd page is looking... can't blame him.
Also:

"He has not yet screamed out in pain, Brother Blood."
"Well, his clothes are off for the most part. Good enough."

And I have to admit, after seeing near-naked Dick all the time, on the last panel I read Raven saying "Try NOT to arouse Wallace while I open the pit door" at first.
