Ra-Ra-Rasputin vs. Atomic Robo

The funny thing is that the outfit Rasputin is wearing there is somewhat similar to the one he wore in Hellboy, which Atomic Robo is initially similar too though a lot lighter in tone.

A similar outfit was worn by Rasputin in the Authority, where he was shown to be one of the previous Doctors.

Anyway, on the similar riff, here's a song by 70s group Boney-M about the guy.

Not that historically accurate though.

Rasputin, possibly the only person in the multiverse to be played by Tom Baker, who might actually have been more... let's be kind and stick to "weird" than the magnificent Mr Baker himself.

Tom Baker is like the British version of Dave Chapelle's impression of Rick James, except in REAL LIFE (and minus the misogyny). I can just imagine Tom doing all sorts of crazy shit that, if you put it in a comedy skit, no one would ever believe.

I love that his most frequent apology to people is, "You'll have to forgive me if I don't remember you, because I was terribly drunk at the time."

Atomic Robo can consider himself lucky he didn't fight this Rasputin.
Because if there is a way do rape a robot, he'd probably find it.

Ah, Rasputin. He (or an amazing lookalike with the same name) is also a major character in Corto Maltese.

Дай мне голву[sic] Тэслы[sic].
=> Дай мне голову Теслы.
= Give me the head of Tesla.
Presumably: (Bring me the head of Tesla.)

Распутину это надо для мира духов.
= Rasputin needs this for the peace of the spirits.
Presumably: (Rasputin needs this for his soul's rest.)

Not sure why "spirits" is in plural. "мир духов" is very unidiomatic in Russian -- the natural interpretation would be "world of perfume" rather than "peace of spirits". "Peace" can't be used figuratively in Russian to mean "calm", "serenity", or "rest" -- it literally means "absence of war". A direct translation of "calm", "serenity", or "rest" would be better -- there'd actually be a pun in the literal translation of "rest of the spirit".

Also, "soul" may be a better choice of word than "spirit". I am unsure of the exact theological distinction, but I think it fits better.

Принеси мне Тэслу[sic]!
=> Принеси мне Теслу!
= Carry Tesla to me!
Presumably: (Bring Tesla to me!)

Притащи мне этого электрического демона.
=> Drag this electric demon to me.

Будь[sic] прокляты твои глаза.
=> Будьте прокляты твои глаза.
= Curse your eyes.

Тэсла[sic] себя покажет!
=> Тесла себя покажет!
= Tesla will show himself!

Indeed?

Где Тэсла[sic]?
=> Где Тесла?
= Where is Tesla?

That's a very incisive question to ask when being ghostbusted, Mr. Rasputin.

Google Translate may beat the socks off Babelfish, but it's not as good as running the text by a native speaker. I suppose I should be grateful fake Cyrillic gibberish wasn't used, as is customary in comics.:P

There is the famous (though possibly apocryphal) example of going through a computer translator twice and "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" ending up as "The vodka is good but the meat is rotten."

One of my favorite songs!

I generally prefer the legend, but I do wonder if Rasputin was one of the Christian mystics Russia is famous for (startsi?).

Love to, but I've got a choice between paying for school or comics, and school wins.

Because school will teach me how to make comics!
