AMAZING #408: Spider-Man vs. Armada
Upon the request of [info]psychop_rex, here are a few pages that show Armada, a spider-villain that fell by the wayside.
This is from AMAZING #408, and features the Ben Reilly Spider-Man in a costume I always kind of liked.

Armada is fighting Spider-Man (Ben Reilly) under orders from Mysterio, who is launching his own television channel.

He doesn't like ER? Wow, Armada *must* be crazy!

I don't get why the blasts from Armada's drones (which he calls "Mary" and "Anita") aren't scorching Ben's costume. Oh, well.

The kid, Shakim Panzos, was rescued by Spider-Man earlier, explaining why he's deciding to "help."

The cracks are really special lenses secretly placed over them to confuse him. Aside from the movies, I don't think Spider-Man's mask lenses EVER get cracked, even though they are made of glass and/or plastic.

And here's where Ben realizes Mysterio put special lenses over his mask. Also, he warns the gang-member to leave Shakim alone.

I've seen his lenses get cracked, although not quite like that. Usually they crack in such a way that pieces fall out. Which doesn't really make sense. His lenses are plastic with some kind of mylar-like mirror coating (yeah, even though they're white all the time... Alex Ross draws them as mirrors but it always looks stupid).

So generally you wouldn't think they'd break like that. Ever see those eyeglasses ads where they hit the lens with a hammer and it doesn't break? That's just plain old polycarbonate. The stuff is practically indestructible. You wouldn't want sharp shards right next to your eye if you're fighting supervillains, so you'd probably want to use something like that.

Why can't Peter switch to that costume? :/

For a time after the Clone Saga ended (but before Gathering of Five) Peter used Ben's impact webbing.

Thanks, man! Not really what I was expecting, actually - most of what I've heard about Armada is his insane devotion to those little flying robot thingies, which he gives girls names to and regards as his best friends - therefore, every time one of them gets blown up, he's all 'NOOOOO! YOU KILLED CAMILLA!' (or whatever that particular robot's name is). It's oddly touching and completely hilarious at the same time.
I read one comic (which I unfortunately don't have anymore) which is also an Armada/Mysterio teamup featuring Ben as the webslinger, where Mysterio has managed to convince Spidey that he's shrunk to the size of a toy, and is trapped in a kid's bedroom filled with killer action figures. Problem is, the 'action figures' are actually Armada's robot galpals, and not having thought this through very thoroughly, he grows more and more horrified as Ben demolishes them one by one. Finally, the last straw is reached ("H-he killed Laurie! Poor, sweet Laurie!"), and he bursts out of the control room and flies straight at Spidey, screaming vengeance - which, of course, wrecks the illusion completely. It's pretty wild.

Yes, actually naming his drones and "giving" them personalities is pretty out there. But it was the 90s, and new villains needed their own hook. I'll see what I can do about examples of Armada's madness.

I'd appreciate that.
