Supes' prom night. 6 pages, by Tim Sale from his issue of DC's sadly short lived Solo.

Wow, that's a really sweet story.

It's funny to see, though, how young Clark's drawn kind of chubby.

Loeb seems to shake his... crappiness when paired with Sale.

Here's hoping their Cap origin retread is decent.

LE' GASP! You mean to tell me that the guy that's writing the Hulk and the Ultimatum which is about the biggest crap of all time wrote THIS! Unbelievable.

It seems more likely that Sale drew the pages and Loeb scripted over them afterwards.

That...makes sense but I prefer to believe that this was Jeph Loeb being good since all writers have both good and bad stuff under their belt.

I actually like the above story much more than the usual Loeb, but I must take exception: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, DARK VICTORY, and CATWOMAN: WHEN IN ROME are all littered with varying degrees of Loeb's trademark suck. It's more subtly done than wholescale slaughter of characters, but flat, one-note characterizations, plot holes, worn-out tropes, and lame Hollywood cliche dialogue abound.

But he gets away with it because he knows how to utilize Sale's wonderful artwork beautifully.

Well, as he grew up on a farm in small town Kansas, perhaps "hayseed" might be more appropriate, and he sort of was.

I think the best part of Ka-El/Clark Kent is the hayseed part.

Some nice touches in that. LOved the qick-getting-cleany thing in the clouds. But in that second panel....Clark is Huge. Really, really huge. Or Ma and Pa have been turned into midgets for the day. And that last shot? What kind of profile is that for a Superhero?
(Oh wow, first real post on Scans Daily....please don't eat me)

Technically, he's not a superhero yet at that point.

And he's sitting down.

I love the last shot . . . he's human and vulnerable and flipping adorable. He's not a hero, he's a kid going to his first prom with a girl he really likes, and I love that the art reflects that.

Clearly Miss Gulch upgraded from her old bicycle following the tornado.

And I'm torn on the art here, in most cases it's atmospheric, in panels like Ma Kent taking the picture it's closer to caricature, and the shift between the two is somewhat jarring.

Most definitely an homage. It is Kansas.

(Now that it comes up, Smallville, Kansas is probably also why there was that Choose Your Own Adventure book with Supergirl as Dorothy...)

There WAS? Really? I didn't know there WERE any DC 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books - I thought it was all original material.

Okay, googling for Supergirl and Wizard of Oz, it was technically under a sister brand of CYOA called "Which Way Books"; DC also licensed a book each for Superman, Batman and the Justice League. Looking back it was actually pretty crack-y; some supervillain zapped Supergirl and trapped her inside a nearby edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

And my god, I didn't even remember what the cover looked like. Apparently she also went to Camelot. And it came out in 1984-85, so in retrospect it's a shame being the "master of Supergirl's fate" couldn't stop her from dying one year later.

...hot damn. Supergirl goes to Oz and then to Camelot. I think I had a dream like that once (only it was Batman, not Supergirl). A shame there's not really an effective way of posting 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books on the 'net; this looks like it'd be hysterical.

In Peter's case, the girl is tapping her foot outside the gym while Pete is ducking steel tentacles or pumpkin bombs.

Even though was probably mostly Tim Sale's work, I've always found Jeph Loeb's DC work very enjoyable and a million times better than his Marvel work (and that includes hush and Superman/Batman).

Aww - this is nice. Kinda makes you wonder what Clark's life would have been like if he'd stuck with his childhood sweetheart instead of marrying the big-time city reporter. (Not that I'm complaining, mind you; I like Lois, but... still.)
