Mom lived? Or no?

I suppose it makes sense that a 'superboy' would have some real issues fitting in.

The social worker's notes seems to indicate that she did, since it mentions both parents.

Wait. What?

There's no way he could be in the system without medical checkups, and no way a medical checkup could fail to note "hey look he's got unbreakable bloody skin and various other superpowers," so there's no way foster care could fail to know about his abilities, so there's no way potential foster parents wouldn't have been warned. Would some of them still not be able to take it even if they'd thought they could, sure, but it wouldn't be mystifying to his social worker.

we don't know if he had unbreakable skin at this point, or if his powers were still developing.

He's Superboy, ain't he? Couldn't spank Superboy when he was two. Besides, it's clear here he does have superstrength, and obviously lacks the control or discipline to hide it (and wouldn't begin to have any real comparison between what his own reflexes are and what a normal kid his age's should be anyway even if he could regulate himself to that degree).

He's based on Superman, but we don't know if their backgrounds are the same yet (ie, we dont know if he's an alien or not).

Moreover, from what we see of his younger self, we know he was going out of his way to hide his powers.

If those powers are well-developed enough to include heat-vision and super-strength, there's no way a clumsy, angry kid is going to hide them from a medical exam - which, make no mistake, if they're wondering why they can't manage to place this kid in a home, they're GOING to look at all possible angles, including abuse, which means LITERALLY crawling up his ass with a flashlight, simply to make sure that none of his would-be parents touched him inappropriately. Good luck trying to control his reflex reactions in an uncomfortable situation like that, when even grown adult men often can't keep from "bearing down" when they receive prostate exams.

Unless his powers are MAGIC-based, this does not pass even the rules of reality that Waid himself has established in this story.

He might be able to turn the powers off.

That would kind of contradict what we saw of his abject lack of control over his own powers in these very same pages.

And do you seriously believe that Waid has even thought about this far enough to have said to himself, "Well, yes, that's a natural consequence of this situation, but I've already figured out that he could turn his own powers off, even as a child," or are you just looking for an excuse?

Because once again, I see shallow, surface-level thinking on Waid's part. If it turns out that he's actually come up with yet-to-be-revealed on-the-page explanations for all these plot holes I keep pointing out, then I swear I will apologize, but you know what? I don't think he has, and as such, I don't think he should be allowed to invoke the specter of OMG REALISM as a justification for his negativity here, when all it really amounts to is Silver Age hokeyiness that's decided to don an emo suit.

The lack of control in these pages is clearly a temper issue. It's not about being physically unable to tamp down his powers.

"And do you seriously believe that Waid has even thought about this far enough to have said to himself, "Well, yes, that's a natural consequence of this situation, but I've already figured out that he could turn his own powers off, even as a child," or are you just looking for an excuse?"

No, I think it's quite possible Waid didn't bother to ask himself, "Hmm, how could this kid handle a prostate exam?" I'm not all that bothered by that though, in my superhero comics.

"If it turns out that he's actually come up with yet-to-be-revealed on-the-page explanations for all these plot holes I keep pointing out..."

No offense, and I don't know whether you're not reading the comic carefully or only reading what's put on scans_daily or what, but most of the holes you point out are more about where the story might go then where it actually is going.

"I don't think he should be allowed to invoke the specter of OMG REALISM as a justification for his negativity here."

Huh?

Jeez. All that death and destruction could have been avoided if only someone had told the stupid kid about a chain breaker.

I'm so tired of the negative parent images. Even Hyperion's parents dealt better. In a world where new age psychics try to get you in touch with your inner power or religious people are dead sure miracles occur everyday...in THIS world, they HAVE actual superpowered people, yet these bunch of dimwits still can't even try to get the kid help?
