Marvel Zombies Return #1

This is from Marvel Zombies Return #1, by Fred Van Lente and Nick Dragotta.

Zombie Spider-Man finds himself in an alternate dimension resembling the past (specifically, Amazing Spider-Man #68). He reads about the tablet Kingpin and Silvermane are after, which can reveal the key to eternal youth. Spidey thinks that if he finds the tablet, he may be able to cure himself of his his zombism. He also sees Gwen, MJ, Harry, and his younger self.

When the Sinister Six attack, the normal Peter runs off to change and Zombie Spider-Man swings in to save the day.

Then he fights the Kingpin, who is trying to steal the tablet.

Sandman, who had managed to escape, runs into the normal Spider-Man and kills him. Meanwhile, the Zombie Spider-Man is horrified to discover that the other members of the Sinister Six who he killed have turned into zombies themselves and eaten his loved ones.

If this comic were a woman I'd marry it.

(Also; this would come out the day after Disney buys them. Wonder how hard The Disney execs are facepalming at this).

About as hard as they facepalmed when they approved No Country for Old Men or Pulp Fiction. Which is not at all.

Hee. Love the parodied panels from the classic comics!

Weird and Whacked out, but strangely difficult to put down...

I was actually reading some silver age spidey last night, and so to go from that, to reading this issue this morning was a weird transition.

I guess as long as you approach it in the right spirit as if it was just being a warped out black humour issue of What If, then this is enjoyable enough.

And I do prefer Van Lente's take on them over Kirkmans. He at least seems to like doing different things with it.

The moment where the villains had their horrified reaction at Spidey breaking the 'silver age comic' rules of engagement, was particularly delicious. (Pun only partly intended!)

Now that I think about it, this felt like one of those over the top gory Simpsons Halloween episodes.

Maybe that's what they should do from now on? Just release an issue of this at the end of October each year. Might stop people getting completely sick of it, from the seemingly endless amount of series they keep bringing out..

one of those episodes actually ends the same way as above, with their skin sloughing off.

Yeah I remember that one..Still that's where these episodes end, and unfortunately this story will continue..So I guess Zombie Pete is like the new Deadpool of his kind now! :)

Ugh, thanks for the reminder that I don't like Zombie stuff. I like the art by Nick Dragotta though.

The Sinister Six is borderline between "determined' and "stupid"

...

You'd think the fact that they were shocked that Spider-Man ripped that man's innards out would have been enough for them to have the common sense to run away instead of trying to gang up on Peter.

Taken out of context, these scans are kind of just focusing on just the gore..

Whilst the issue as a whole did have some fun at first with the contrast to 60es Spidey issues, before it went all 'Evil dead'..

Yeah that's what I meant by the Evil Dead comparison..

Although I really like Bruce Campbell, those films aren't really my type of thing..And the over the top gory moments in Marvel's zombie comics always reminds me of that. (Which is probably why the Ash charcter seemed to fit right in when they did the Army of Darkness crossover..)

But before it got like that, this issue had almost the same kind of vibe that the Deadpool issue of him interacting with 60es Spidey characters had. (i.e That kind of weird modern day clashing with 60es sensibilities type of thing..)

I liked Evil Dead 2, but not Army of Darkness.

I'm not sure what that means.

Same here. I like zombies, and zombie related humor, but Peter Parker ripping off his own skin over Mary Jane's decapitated head is not entertaining to me.

At the start of the issue when he first shows up in this reality, that's exactly what he's like. And isn't feasting on anyone..

But then he lose's it again when he takes on the villains.. :(

After the second miniseries, the main Marvel Zombie cast (Spider-Man, Luke Cage, etc) are teleported to another dimension. The next two miniseries dealt with different zombies invading the 616 universe.

So this marks the 'return' of the original zombies and what they've been up to.

This whole thing was just horrible and it was just pure gore and it lacked the dark humor the original Marvel Zombies had.

Disturbing gore aside I also hated that stupid panty shot of Mary Jane as she was being killed by Zombie Doc Ock, it was so fucking unnecessary to sexualize such brutal scene...Ugh, glad I didn't buy this crap.
