Disney to acquire Marvel for $4 billion

LOS ANGELES – The Walt Disney Co. says it is acquiring Marvel Entertainment Inc. for $4 billion in cash and stock, bringing characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man into the Disney family.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters.

Disney said Monday that Marvel shareholders will receive $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share they own.

It said the boards of Disney and Marvel have both approved the transaction, but it requires an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.

Source.

I'm wondering if this will mean anything for the Gargoyles comic book series that was published by Slave Labor Graphics.

Makes sense. Marvel get the cash to keep pumping out the movies and resources of a full studio. Disney get a money making list of character licenses and merch. to bring up it's profits.

Whoa.

Not quite sure how you fit Iron Man and the Hulk into the Magic Kingdom. I imagine this means that Universal Studios will have to remove all of it's Marvel-themed rides/attractions?

Maybe they'll be able to keep some of the lower-selling books around now? (Let me keep my delusions.)

Jokes about crossovers aside... (Disney owns like half of the universe anyhow, including some stuff that woulds urprise you...) I'm intrigued at the possibilites of cartoon adaptations.

Maybe we'll even get that 3rd. season of Spectacular.

If it leads to more Marvel Adventures-type books (with the same level of quality) and less shitty-arsed megacrossovers where all the female characters are turned into Pussycat-Dolls types, I'm all for it.

Boy I wish I had Marvel stock.

This is a good move by Disney. Provides them with a strong offering for the younger male demographic to balance what they have with their Hannah Montana girl tweener stuff. Will be interesting for Boom! studios as well.

Man, this is terrible. I doubt it'll effect the comics much, but the movies... One of the reasons Iron Man was so good was that Marvel had their own studio and didn't have to listen to suits who didn't get superheroes. They had people at the helm making decisions who had confidence in a character who had never appeared in a movie before. Sure willing to take risks got us things like Ghost Rider, but I had hoped that since they had their own studio the Marvel movies would improve.

Now they're just going to have the same BS problems DC does making movies of characters that aren't Batman.

The possibilities have been burning up Twitter under the #disneymarvel hashtag. My contributions:

"The Submariner's Showdown at Splash Mountain!"
"Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Pan!"
"Ant Man: It's A Small World After All!"
"Aristocats Assemble!"
"To the Infinity Gauntlet... and Beyond!"
"Mickey Mouse, Sorcerer's Apprentice Supreme!"
"The House of M.M. - the Magneto Mouse Club!"
"Face it, Tigger, you just hit the honey pot!"

And of course, the inevitable showdown between Scrooge McDuck and Norman Osborn.

What would this mean with the movie deals with Fox and such?

Well if people really want to see a bright side. If Disney were to try and Disney-fy the Marvel Universe then they would likely have an issue with one of their new flagships making deals with the devil and retcon out One More Day.

Well, maybe it'll get un-cancelled? ^_^

In any case, I choose to see this as good news. Why? Well, largely because this might mean we get to see Disney comics published in English again! Ever since Gemstone went bankrupt there hasn't been anything... but maybe now that Disney owns a comic book publishing company... we can get a reprint of A Letter From Home? Among other things?
