JSA 30: Guess who's back

Later in the issue, he's offered membership and he joins. I'm glad Matt Sturges is making it a priority to bulk up the ranks. There were way too few members on this team.

Do we know which Fate this is?

The new one from Countdown To Mistery. He frequently expresses insecurity about his abilities later on.

Taking a nod from a previous post about the why Dove couldn't be resurrected in Blackest Night leading to the Lords of Order/White Lantern theory, perhaps Fate's reintroduction is the setup for just that.

I thought Polaris was dead?...

Oh well. He's going to get his ass handed to him again, and that's always good.

This is a new Doctor Polaris, which was introduced in the new Blue Beetle series.

He's a businessman. And a total asshole.

Ugh. That is a REALLY Conservative/Republican thing for Jay to say, especially as he served in WWII...and besides, who even says 'Fight Cannons With Attom Bombs'? It's an illogically unfair argument.

Really not digging the amount of dull expositionary dialogue shoe-horned in. This reallyisn't the 90s anymore.

Quite.

The thing is, it might be something that someone of that time would say, but nowhere in the past has Jay ever said such a thing. He's not the kind of guy to throw those sort of quips around. Most of his stuff is situational, classic superhero banter, and as an elder statesman of DC he hasn't said anything of the sort. I...I just can't see Jay SAYING this, with that inherent jingoistic 'gee whiz' voice. Willingham seems to be pouring it on real thick to hit the reader over the head: "These are old war fogeys!" Well, yes, but no-one said that group was ever homogenous.

The dialogue is just terrible. I kinda did a mental headdesk when I saw Major Damage's quote. 'God like'? Come on!

Willingham needs a dialogue coach. Or a guy hired to specifically do dialogue. Or to stop writing non-creater owned work, period.

The writing! It burns! I don't think I've dropped a title so quickly in my life. In the store, read the first three pages and just asked to take it off of the pull list.

I agree. The dialogue is... AWFUL. Not even in a camp or quirky way.. 'God-level'? What is this- cheap shounen manga!?

you know it just occured to me that it might not be so bad for a guy who could hit one person a thousand times in a second to be suggesting using overkill. Any Flash fight against a normal person would be all about overkill.

I'm kinda torn on this. 1. It's definitely not the type of thing Jay would say (and I base this on the fact that he's always been my favorite Flash and I will read anything he's in, no matter how much I hate the comic he's guesting in) but 2. All he's really suggesting is something I used to say a lot "Overkill is the best kind of kill." But I'm a USMC veteran, so YMMV.

Anyhoo, it's great to see Dr. Fate, no matter how much Willingham's dialogue doesn't fit (my perception of) the team.

Surely that doesn't require this Dr Fate specifically, though? After reading his intro mini, I'd rather have the XTREEM 90s guy who melted the helmet down into throwing knives.

No, I would prefer hector Hall or Kent Nelson , but this guy is ok. "fate" was killed off in like page 3 of the JSA no.1 . at that point I knew it would be good. Seriously "fate" was the wrist re-boot of all time.

I loathe that reboot as well, but at this point it's getting hard for me to make the judgment, worst reboot or worstest reboot? And to your list I would add Inza Nelson.

I only would defend that in the sense that it was for the Giffen JLI book and worked ok for that only.

I truly don't get the feeling that Dr. fate as character needs to be fucked with tho, I really don't.

Yes, outside of JLI, Inza wouldn't work -- but I still liked her. You are right, though. I'm a big fan of all the old school JSA and all the Earth 2 characters pre-COIE.

Actually, that was Linda Strauss (Dr. Fate v 2.5) that appeared in Giffen's Justice League books. Inza's term as Fate didn't come until some years later.

Dr. Fate (original recipe) is my all-time favorite comic character. But Fate has been rebooted so many times (and so frequently poorly, except for the first couple years of the Hector Hall version) that I just can't work up any outrage anymore.

You've clarified one reason why I lost interest in comics. The characters have been diluted, through all the revamps and fiddling and resurections, that they have lost any semblance of "life."

Hector was my favorite Fate besides the original, but I think his ending was too fitting to be screwed with.

Of course, now that I've said that, watch them drag him and Lyta back in a completely hackneyed way that ignores the rules of their deaths.

Meh. The Judomaster in BoP had some tipically witty Simone lines and kicked some people in the face, that's hardly a memorable character. She's still miles better than the one currently appearing in this book, who I think is almost irreparably broken.
At this point, I'd rather have Thomas Jagger or no Judomaster at all, really.

I'm just waiting for the big reveal that she could speak English all along, and was just pretending not to understand for the lulz.

Something along the line of Dinah paying her former team a visit, and Judomaster going, "Dinah! Long time no see! How're Oracle and Huntress doing?"

Damage: Wait, she speaks English?

Dinah: Well of course she does!

I'm not a fan. I don't think magical characters with ill-defined magical powers work well on a superhero team at all. That goes for Zatanna, Doctor Strange, Dr. Fate, Spectre, all of them.

I'm with that. They always seem out of step. Maybe teams should have a magic-type on call for specific situations, but they tend to need hokey reasons why they can't end the case in a page or two. I like sorcery heroes on their own territory, away from the super-hero brawls.

Am I the only one finding the dialogue on this quite bad? None of the characters here really feel like themselves.

Plus, Doctor Fate's return? As far as returns go, NOTHING will top the first storyarc of the original JSA series: "...for me to make my grande entrance."

This one's John Nichol, businessman who attended a Neal Emerson magnetics seminar and apparently unlocked his own metahuman magnetokinesis through it. He would then go on to knock over an Opal City bank, tangle with Hawkgirl and Red Arrow, and most recently get beaten by Blue Beetle.
