And yet, try as I might (and I really have, honest), I really can't get excited and/or interested in Barry's return. I just... don't care.

I'll point this out: by the time Barry disappeared the crew cut was long since gone. When he returned in FC, it was back.

Well, maybe the speed force has a barber shop. Which would be handy.

Well, Jay Garrick is still my favorite Flash, but I have to admit that I've liked (for the most part) this mini. And I can understand your apathy, but I'm old enough to remember when Barry was the only Flash on Earth-1.

The sad part is so can I. I used to be a regular Barry as Flash reader back in the late 70's and 80's. Flash was interesting, but even then Barry as a person was dull as ditchwater to me and the stories were often flat and uninspired. I usually read it for the villains.

I hear ya--I care more about Barry with this Rebirth then I did with Hal, which was surprising, but reading up on his character and his strip on Wednesday Comics have done a lot more to make me dig the character then this.

Then again, this story's main intent is probably not to exactly win over new fans, but to try to make a situation where Barry can come back while not invalidating his death in Crisis.

So. Johns DID do with Zoom what he did with Sinestro.

Think back to Hal's return and see what I mean.

Not that it doesn't work. In fact, it makes it even fit into that SECRET ORIGINS thing, which said Barry WAS the lightning.

"Barry West... you didn't just tap into the Speed Force, you personally created a new fundamental force of nature, that traveled back in time, making you the origin of every speedster ever! You're the most awesome character ever!"

I don't care for this at all. Lightning and chemicals creating the Speed Force? Yeah... no.

Indeed. A bunch of chemicals being hit by lightning while pouring over a blond guy just don't work that way.

Then again, they wouldn't work the other way either. Flash fact.

Barry Allen. If I remember correctly, the retcon wasn't that he created the speed force and went back in time to become the lightning bolt, but that he became one with the speed force and then ...

I didn't like it then. Don't like it now. But it's not the fault of the current writer. He's just using what he has at his disposal.

Brainfart on my part with the name...

But I disagree that it was ever "Barry Allen created the speed force" until now.

The closest was an old story, predating Waid coming up with the Speed Force, where he became the lightning bolt that went back in time to give himself powers. But since that origin also had Barry as a Reed Richardsesque superscientist that proved Tachyons exist, and the "lightningbolt" talked to Barry and got his permission before hitting him, I call shenanigans on pointing to that story as justifying this one.

Max calling Barry "Lightning Rod" is epic cute, but the plot here is smothering my warm fuzzies. I don't like this idea of Barry creating the speed force. It completely undermines all the speedsters- particularly the example with Max here- I mean why does all of Max's backstory, his timejumps, adventures and resulting baggage, etc HAVE to be indelibly linked to Barry? He's cool and all, but why does EVERYTHING have to come back to him?

I've always really liked the idea that Barry accidentally tapped into something huge, some large fundamental aspect of the universe and managed to tame it. This? Eh, not so much.

Again, you want to blame Robert Loren Fleming for that. It was him(I think) that did the Secret Origins story that made Barry the lightning. Which, I'm assuming, was the germ of the idea that became the Speed Force later.

Of course, the Speed Force is totally unscientific twaddle, but eh.

I always saw that as Barry-in-the-speedforce reaching out to his younger self.

Which is pretty different from explicitly saying Barry Allen created the Speedforce.

It's happened to Superman a time or two. We even found out one time, he inspired the first DC masked superhero, the original Crimson Avenger (Something like - Solider dying from poison gas in WWI has a vision (courtesy of Rama Kushna) showing Superman dying at the hands of Doomsday, this inspired him to live to avenge the hero who wouldn't be born for another 50 years)

Don't forget Morrison's revelation that the entire multiverse is contained in a Superman-shaped statue. Oh, and the ULTIMATE weapon is a Superman-shaped robot. Or something.

Elliot S! Maggin was fond of this sort of thing for Superman. He revealed that

1) Among every single known species in the universe, no matter their language, their name for Superman is pronounced "Superman" (those specific three syllables).

2) Superman was the result of a secret eugenics program by the Guardians of the Universe to create the ultimate Green Lantern who would one day take over for the Guardians.

3) The Big Bang created a chunk of matter that coalesced into a sword with the familiar S-symbol on its hilt. Superman was destined to one day pick up this sword, at which point he would achieve omnipotence.

You know what my favorite thing about Barry Allen is? He's Bart Allen's grandfather. Therefore, he had to exist for Bart to be born. Bart is my personal favorite of the Flash family. ...Although I like Wally rather a lot too, largely due to the Justice League cartoon series (in which he was voiced by Michael Rosenbaum *swoon*).
