Arrows in BoP
I was flipping through the Birds of Prey: Platinum Flats trade, and happened upon my favourite panel with Ollie ever:

And thought I'd scan a couple more bits from that book.

First of all, spaghetti context:

Manhunter is spying on Canary for Babs. Because we all know that batstalking-by-proxy means "I miss you and I'm worried about you."

Later...

That foot to the face is Dinah saying hello to Kate.

Some issues later, the Birds are dealing with the Silicon Syndicate, and Canary and the Arrows show up to help:

Look at them, having fun working for Babs together!

I can't help thinking that Tony Bedard should take over Green Arrow/Black Canary. (Either that, or when Dinah and Ollie got married, he and Mia should've just joined the Birds along with Dinah.)

Hey, Black Canary not sucking, missed that.

What do you mean "not sucking"? It's not like she's shown up anywhere since BoP ended for her to be badly written in. >.>

Ollie working for Babs? Now there's a clusterfuck of a disaster waiting to happen. The two of them could start off the next Crisis all by themselves.

Hahaha, but it would be a fun disaster! Actually, I could see them having a lot of entertaining interactions in clashing.

I cannot imagine how you'd ever get either of them to agree to it in the first place. Like, I can almost see Dinah convincing Ollie to give it a shot, but I can't picture her thinking it'd be a good idea, so that's out before it starts. And Babs wouldn't even consider it.

(Helena's expression of "Are you fucking kidding me" would be pretty sublime, too.)

dammit I can't type for shit today

Why send flowers or a card when you can send a vigilante cape?

I just love how clear it is that Babs is trying to get caught here. She's got satellites. She's got Gypsy. She's got Helena. She's got Dick Grayson. She could stalk Dinah, directly or by proxy, for a decade and Dinah would never notice. But what does she do instead? She sends Kate, the sloppy noob who is, of her entire standard team at the time, the absolute least experienced at stealth and subterfuge (even Zinda has done more undercover). In other words, the one most guaranteed to get noticed, beat down, and dragged back to drop on Barbara's doorstep.

I said it at the old S_D, I'll say it again: it's the superhero equivalent of flicking paper footballs at a girl's forehead. "Hey! Pay attention to me!" So juvenile! Oh Babs. ♥

I like how Babs gets all huffy when Kate calls her out for moving to be closer to Dinah.

ARROWFAMILY.

I think GA/BC should be like 90% them being domestic and stuff. Occasionally Dinah has to go kick ass with the Birds or the Justice League and Ollie has to cook and do the dishes all by himself. Roy and Lian can live with them! Or next door. Also Connor is there.

You know what I like?

Dinah and Ollie working together, and they're both competent.

Too often writers feel the need to bust down on to build up the other, and I hate that.

ITA. If they could replicate a fraction of the chemistry and relationship Ollie and Dinah had in the JLU, the book would be a hundred times better than it is.

GA/BC has kind of swung back and forth on which of them is competent. Under Winick, more often than not (despite some fairly notable exceptions, such as the infamous sword/throat moment with Deathstroke), Ollie was a buffoonish sitcom dad, with Dinah and Mia as his sarcastic wiffe and daughter mocking him and fixing his mistakes (I always think of that bit with the guys disguised as aliens, which is a cliffhanger and a teaser the whole point of which is to make Ollie look grossly incompetent). Kreisberg's gone the opposite route.

I think writers forget that anyone with functional empathy in their system is going to side with the person they just tore down rather than the person they're trying to build up when they screw such a story up.

And why would such a story even be happening amongst friends and co-workers unless one plans a face-heel turn or one is a well known Jerkass?

Nicola Scott likes to draw elongated necks. Although I still do like her art here, it's not perfect, but her work on Secret Six is top-notch, IMO.

Here, there are things like that one could nit-pick. Like, I never can tell if the Ollie eating spaghetti scene was meant to make him look extremely goofy, or if it just turned out that way unintentionally. I still love it to death though.
