Flash: Rebirth #4 preview
From The Source.

I'm still waiting for Johns to acknowledge Bart as a Thawne descendant...so I'm a sucker for the crazy family tree, sue me.

Is Johns taking issue with the whole "Barry as the DC Universe's first saint" that Mark Waid started and most other DC writers (forgive the pun) ran with?

Of course, this is Thawne that's talking, and he was only a "boring lab rat" *before* he became the Flash. And he was willing to (selfishly?) stay in the future with Iris before getting "called up" to save the universe.

If Johns took issue with the concept, he'd have had one of his pets debunk it. Instead, he's having a villain say it, which means that he's taking issue with the complaint.

He's also showing how Barry really wasn't all that boring. I wholeheartedly approve of the idea, but I do take exception to the retcons to Barry's backstory. DC is allegedly the more idealistic of the Big Two, so why can't they have a hero who isn't motivated by some tragedy?

So Barry killed Thrawne, origanally? Huh. Didn't know that. What do you want to bet that this particular incident is not going to get the "Max Lord" treatment?

On the other hand, yayyyyy Max!

Oh. I only just found that out now, so I was assuming it was a retcon (like Barry's new darker and edgier origins). My bad.

Thawne had already killed Iris, and bragged that he was going to kill Barry's would-be new bride, Fiona Webb. Barry chased him down and snapped Thawne's neck almost at the last instant (Zoom was going for the vibrating-hand-through-the-brain trick again). It led to a very drawn-out trial.

Well, the long drawn out trial wasn't really the writer's fault. Cary Bates was about to wrap up the storyline when word came down that Barry Allen was on the death list for Crisis on Infinite Earths, so rather than come up with a new story arc after that he figured he'd let the title out out on the high point of Barry being acquitted and going off to (ostensibly) live happily-ever-after with Iris in the 30th Century. So the trial had to be stretched until Crisis was ready to go.

Well it was..what 10 years in DC's time? and Diana killing Maxwell Lord is around 3-4 years and the one that most readers will likely remember.

I'm not sure how 'poisons your family through you' works out? Thawne seems to be attacking everyone who uses the Speed Force -- whether or not they are a Flash, or a Flash-enemy (Savitar could by no means be described as part of the 'family').

I'm still waiting for Johns to acknowledge Bart as a Thawne descendant

That, and it'd be nice if Johns remembers that *Owen Mercer* is a Thawne descendant, since he's the one who *wrote* it.

There's a difference between "remembering it" and "constantly referencing it" - the second one is really poor writing.

I don't want constant referencing. I want it to be used in a place where it makes sense to use it -- if Thawne is going after speedsters, including ones that are enemies of the Flash like Savitar, it seems like using Owen Mercer would make sense.

All right, I got you. There are a couple things though.
-First of all, Kid Boomerang isn't a speedster. Not like Jay Garrick, Johnny Quick, Wally West, Barry Allen, Bart Allen, Max Mercury or any character that can run fast that has or has not appeared in Flash Rebirth.
-Has, as far as I know, no established connection to the Speed Force. It's not certain that Mercer is tapping it to throw boomerangs - likely considering his heritage, but not a given.
-Lastly, if Prof Thawne ever said "I'm going after all the speedsters" I must have missed that. I can't remember him saying that.

Actually, Owen *is* a speedster -- in OUTSIDERS: FIVE OF A KIND he outruns the mach-force suction of a catastrophic decompression on the space-station he and Nightwing are on.

Now, whether he's a *competent* speedster is certainly open for debate.

Technically, in the DCU every speedster is connected to the Speed Force, except Zoom/Hunter Zolomon, who is actually manipulating *time* to give himself superspeed.

Thawne didn't say he was going after all speedsters -- he said he was going after Barry's family. But he killed Savitar and Lady Savitar, who were not friends/allies at all; they were *enemies* of Wally -- they didn't even exist when Barry was around. If Geoff Johns is bring in every currently living speedster, it seems a little odd that he excluded Owen Mercer.

My reasons for liking Wally-as-Flash better than Barry-as-Flash:

1) I knew about Wally first because of Justice League/JLU.

2) Yay legacy heroes!

3) Wally's lovely butt.

Barry was always notoriously late. It was a running(pardon the pun) joke for years. Iris, before she knew he was the Flash, called him "the slowest man alive."

This is good(and I've liked the book so far, even though I'm not a Flash fan). What I always liked about Prof. Zoom is his unremitting, unrepentant, sadistic viciousness, and Johns seems to have called this up. He reminds us: this is the only man Barry found it necessary to kill. This is a Rogue than cannot be made friendly(if you can call him something so cute as a "Rogue" anyway) If he does for Zoom what he did for Sinestro, I'll be happy.

That said: you don't see it here but you do in the pages in the preview--WHAT THE FUCK IS IT WITH JOHNS AND INJURIES TO ARMS?

I'll give Johns a pass on making an Anti-Speed Force, because he's just taking the longstanding "Anti-Flash" concept to it's logical conclusion.

However, I'm a little annoyed that he's dismissing legitimate complaints by having a villain make them yet again.

I don't really care for the idea, personally. What about the Speed Force necessitates opposite polarities? Seems to me that he's trying to make a Flash version of the Sinestro Corps. Even though he's already killed off Inertia Kid Zoom, depowered Zoom, and probably will never resolve the Rival/Max Mercury thing.

Dammit, I want Zoom back.

Because in the DCU EVERYthing is about opposite polarities. Keep in mind, DC has pretty much always been about a GOOD vs. EVIL polarity.

maybe it's what keeps the speed force from going crazy. I mean supposedly it's what keeps moving, but people with the speed force can go from one place to another in an instant. Maybe it's what keeps things flowing in a logical order.

Johns *has* acknowledged it, in Flash #224, the "Rogue War" arc. Bart says "Allen blood runs through my veins, not his."
Zoom II saying "You should be fighting on our side, you have evil genes!" and Bart saying "Thanks but no thanks." is Johns acknowledging it and saying "choose for yourself who you want to be".

So, Hal...er, Barry comes back to life and everyone's happy.

Then, there's a threat where everything is going wrong with the Green Lantern rings, er, Speed Force.

Now, Sinestro, er, Professor Zoom is back to life and has secretly been behind the whole thing in the first place.

Anyone else getting deja vu?
