I can't see Cass feeling Bruce's death changes the meaning of the symbol she fights for.

Wasn't there an old Batgirl story where Batman asks Cass if she's really committed to work for him, and she specifically says "no.". Then she touches the Bat emblem on his suit and says "For this."

Well honestly i can see it. it may be a stretch, and might need some MORE explaining, but from the very begining it was HIM she fought for. He was her father figure. During the whole Bruce Wayne Fugitive thing, she stood against the whole Batman Family with him. she was more loyal to him than to anyone else.

i think it could use more explaining, yes, but its only issue one. we might get more.

WTF? This guy seems to get Cass as much as Beechen did. She didn't fight for Bruce - often she fought in spite of him. She fought for herself. For her own salvation. She fought for the ideal of the Bat. She would never give it up like that - saying something like that. She might give it to Stephanie, FOR Steph. She might give it up because she has deeper plans (ala Tim's search for Bruce). But she would never do it like this!

Do any of the writers DC assigns to Batgirl ever bother to read the lengthy Cassandra Cain run of the series? It doesn't seem like it.

Oh and color me surprised it's Steph. NOT. This reveal needed all this build-up and secrecy? I remember at Comiccon at a DC panel Steph got the most applause votes when Didio polled who they thought Batgirl was - Cass got almost none. Most people assumed it would be either Steph or Misfit, especially after the Oracle: The Cure mini. So all the whole point of the guessing game was to drive up sales in the first issue? If this becomes a Steph-only star title with just cameos by Babs and Cass, I predict a huge-drop off week to week.

Is Cass in this any title for more pages than this (and not in flashback?). Because as much as I like Steph I have zero interest in the book unless the old Batgirl is still a major player (of any kind).

Honestly, I love that first page scan. You can tell possibly that Miller understands the character and the friendship between the two. That I heartly love to death and wish DC would frigging have had more of that.

Then that next page it's like someone from DC Editoral kicked Miller out and slipped in this page of script. This screams Editoral on that last page with Cass dropping the Batgirl title.

So I take it we're going to be having a Cassandra Batgirl week for this?

So many thoughts.

Yeah for Steph. (and happy for Nevermore)

What did Cass ever do to deserve this?

Why do we have Depressed!Babs here and LoveLife!Babs in Batman:Blackest Night?

So with Wendy now in a wheel chair apparently nobody was cured in Search for the Cure. DC? Could have my money back please for the three issues of Nothingness I paid for?

I still think that there will be multiple Batgirls.

Someday I hope Gail will tell us what she was going to do with the book.

"Self-Delusion like that is what makes us friends"?

I dunno, that strikes me as too wordy for Cass.

Then again, it's post Beechen.

I don't mind Steph being Batgirl, but I still don't like anything they've done with her in quite a while. I just want to undo everything from OYL on.

We can't use Skrulls for DC. We need something new.

Clayface Fragment that, after a fight with the real Cass, became her and thought she was her, and went crazy?

Meanwhile, the real Cass was off in some no-name city trying to find her own path in the world like the ending of her own series implied?

Yes, I think that will do nicely for the 'canon world inside my head'. A little cheap, but, well, the alternative is Beechen.

Those two pages are really the clincher. On the one hand, they really need to go into about Cass more. I'll be really disappointed if she doesn't stick around regularly, or at least get some major face-time elsewhere.

On the other, it almost seems metacritical, like Cass is saying "yeah, they want to stick me behind bad writers, refuse to believe I'm a good guy always and lead vast campaigns to distract from my role here? Well fuck them! They can all go to hell, then!" It won't be as fun unless she doesn't fall into limbo or turn up as a villain again, though.

I miss Steph's hair cap from Gotham Gazette. :(

Well let's look at it this way. We can be angry about Cassandra Cain not being Batgirl or we can be happy there is actually a monthly comic book all about Stephanie Brown who has been sorely overlooked for years. I choose the latter.

Does anyone see that Cass could be up to something, setting up a storyline where she goes undercover for a year or so to infiltrate some organization or other? She shows up for a few months as a new mystery crimefighter who is eventually unmasked and reclaims the Batgirl uniform, while Stephanie goes back to being Spoiler (or does the undercover gambit herself?)

Almost everything has all been done before in fiction, the details change but storytelling has its own rules and limitations. Writers move the characters through various processes over and over.

Well that's a rather flimsy excuse for Cass stop being Batgirl... I was hoping she'd give it up because she'd feel wracked with guilt over the killing she'd done while wearing the symbol... as if she'd dishonored what it stood for.

She'd be wrong to think that way of course, but it'd be a perfectly reasonable human reaction to have. And Cass (pre Beechan) seemed to be all about taking responsibility for her actions, even things that were out of her control.

I can't be happy for Spoiler.

We've seen how DC treated the last Batgirl. Why on earth would anyone expect Steph to fare better?

It's like a kid that mistreated his puppy to the point where it's at death's door, and rather than try to nurse the poor thing back to health, he rushes off to the pet store for a new one.

I won't be buying any of this. It just makes me tired. Not even sad or annoyed. Just worn out.

Cass's reasoning for dropping the cowl was more than a little editorial and contrived, but I did appreciate that both the decision and the choice of successor was hers. I'm hoping she sticks around in some regard, because seeing them hanging out and being awesome together again was really my favorite part of the issue. Did I miss something or is this the first time we've seen them do that since Steph came back?

And I'm sort of hoping to see Dick give her some guidance instead of the smackdown, but I'm not really getting my hopes up.
