Bruce Takes in Four New 'Orphans'
In which Batman and Robin break the law and break up the Beatles.

Obligatory out of context panel:

(Just in case?: "Paul is dead" is an urban legend alleging that Paul McCartney of the British rock band The Beatles died in 1966 and was replaced by a look-alike and sound-alike.

The legend hinges on supposed hints among the Beatles' many recordings and presumed to be deliberately placed by The Beatles or others. Hundreds have been cited at various times; they include statements heard when a song is played backwards, symbolic interpretations of obscure lyrics, and ambiguous imagery on album covers. Some of these have become well known, such as the fact that on the cover of Abbey Road, McCartney is the only barefooted Beatle and is out of step with the others.
)

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_is_dead)

Paul Saul is dead?

When it looks like Eden Records' star Saul Cartwright, may be dead (and replaced with a look-alike), Eden stockholder Bruce Wayne invites Saul's group, the 'Orphans' to Wayne Manor. But can Batman and Robin discover the truth, when ... well, problems ensue. And taping. Lots and lots of taping. Illegal taping by Bruce. He bugs everything in the mansion by the end of the story, including all outgoing calls. Dick and Bruce are constantly hiding microphones around the mansion, then running down to the batcave to analyze the recordings on reel to reels. This was not at all easy to edit down, but I made sure to include the panels with the floating heads of Batman and Robin.

So, um, Saul keeps a cassette recorder with him at all times, even during dinner. Dick decides to steal it.

It's nice that they dress for dinner together.

Some great other things happen, like some actual detective work and a visit to a recording studio.

Then Bruce admits they never needed to go to the recording studio, because he's been taping all the outgoing calls.

Odd, huh? Batman and Robin v. Urban Legend. Or something. Thank you, Mr. Frank Robbins. But especially Mr. Irv Novick.

Thanks for posting these, the story kicks ass. So, are the band called the orphans or the twists?

They're "The Oliver Twists", the "Orphans" nickname is word play on of the most famous English orphans of all time "Oliver Twist", as well as the fact that IIRC, they all are orphans.

AHAHAHAHA, oh my god, I did the whole "play the record backwards" thing to find out if Paul was really dead!

But oh, this story is delightful. Dick actually calls Bruce a "cutie"!

(And the inclusion of the floating heads panels are appreciated.)

Ha.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

HA!

This is AMAZING. *new favorite story, ever* This evening I'll have to iconize Robin punching 'John Lennon' in the face. That is classic.

Who were those Beatles clones from the Teen Titans? They should have a battle of the bands between the two groups.

You're probably thinking of the fabulous Flips. But they were a normal, all-American, co-ed, motorcycle-ridin', surf-music band.

There were two bands stories IIRC, the Flips, and another band in the Mad Mod story, the one which ended up with Robin wearing a barrel while one of the band went on in his tunic...

I was laughing from the moment I saw the cover :D
The art here is really good. Floating-ghost-Batman-with-psychedelic-swirls is way more effective than I-put-on-my-half-Spider-mask-today!

I like how floating-ghost-Batman and floating-ghost Robin communicate telephathically with each other. They should do that all the time.

OMG, this is genius! How did I never know Batman was hip enough to tackle the "Paul is dead" mystery?

And did Dick actually call Bruce a cutie?

Also I love it when Dick and Bruce are drawn this way. Especially in the scene where Bruce is tenderly carrying Bruce to the Batcave.

*nods* with you on the art and that one panel in particular. Poor, knocked out with a tape recorder Robin. Good thing the Batcave IS private.

And is Dick calling Bruce a cutie or his cunning scheme of faking Alfred's birthday a cutie? I believe it's up to the individual conscience of the comic reader.
