I actually liked Giffen's style at this time and after. And he helped prepare me with this stuff to transition to foreign and alternative comics styles, starting with the guy he was using as a crutch at this time, Jose Munoz. Without that introduction it might have taken me longer, I think.
And anyway, compare to Steve Lightle. Which when I was a kid thought looked really cool because he had a sharp surface style, but only recently did I notice how very, very bad the anatomy that surface covered was.
I LOVE Ol-Vir, but he's always easy to beat. Just bring some lead. By my count, in this storyline alone, there's at least two incidents where he ought to have died. For instance, when Element Lad very, very gleefully turns his costume to lead--which would appear to be a violation of the Legion's rule against killing, wouldn't it? That's POISONING Ol-Vir. Irreparably. But Tromian to his core, Element Lad--and Ultra Boy--just go "Aww!"(no seriously, they do)
Given the greater understanding now given in GLC of how racist the Daxamites are, and that Ol-Vir is basically a member of a one-man cult of death(that of Darkseid; one can assume he heard the ALE and now is freelancing under it), it would seem, given also all the xenophobia Johns has introduced into the current Legion's world, Ol-Vir would be a great character with which to explore that. Unless he is in fact dead.
