When Bats was human...

This is why I love the B:TAS Bruce Wayne/Batman, horrible brown suit nonwithstanding:

From Robin's Reckoning:
Bruce comforts(!) Dick when Dick feels guilty about not stopping Tony Zucko from killing his parents.
Bruce: I know it must be very difficult.
Dick: If only I could have stopped him! I saw him coming out of the tent! I knew he didn't belong there!
Bruce: I know. You keep thinking, If only I had done something differently. If only I could have... warned them. But there isn't anything you could have done. There isn't anything either of us could have done.
Dick: Your mom and dad? Does the hurt ever go away?
Bruce: I wish I could say yes. But it will get better in time. For you. That I promise.

From Baby Doll:
Bats confronts a very sorry Mary Dahl, who kidnapped her previous cast mates from a popular TV show that made her a star in order to make a new one and reclaim her lost fame.
"I didn't mean to."

It was kinda hard associating this Bats with the Batgod/Batdick that was later in the JL, JLU, and TNBA. And I would think this Bats WOULDN'T HAVE INDULGED IN AN ICKY AND INCESTUOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH BABS!!! Sorry, that particular bit in Batman Beyond and in the Mystery of the Batwoman really really annoyed me.

In a more lighter note (and to make things legal):

"Fanhandling" should definitely be in the S_D slogan.

the awesomenss of the DCAU in action. an essential definition of the batman/robin relationship in just four short sentences. it's official DCAU > DCU

because of her only slight resemblance to the "real" diana(which, the dcau being practically an elseworld falls a littel flat) oder because of a special charactertrait of hers that just rubs you the wrong way?

Because of a few things. She didn't win her right to her costume, she stole it. All of her big name villains aren't actually her villains. Her most signature power appears exactly once in the entire history of the show. In fact the show did everything in its power to make her little more than a female superman, stripping away all of her unique powers and character traits; DCAU!Diana was just another super-strong warrior bitch.

She didn't win her right to her costume, she stole it.

and wallys the first flash, there is no hal jordan, hawkgirl and her species are invaders and spies...list goes on. but i see your point. diana earning her costume was always important for the character, but i think her quest to redeem herself in the eyes of her sisters, to show them that patriarchsworld is capable of good, could also have played out pretty well, while still being true to the essence of the character.

all her big name villains aren't actually her villains.

well hades, ares and aresia all had a special backstory/obsession with diana. for a character without a own show to pull from that's fairly decent. hawkgirl only got hawkman(x2) and the shadowthief(and shadowthief had far more connections to the second hawkman). martian manhunter got those aliens from secret origins. it's a teams serie and every explanation for the villains/bakstory etc had to be exactly in the same(or next part of the) episode the villains appeared in. batman didn't get any villains in the whole of jlu!

...stripping away all of her unique powers and character traits
nope.

she had to earn her powers late in the series, true, but she had her own character from the get go. again, this is not her "real" new earth self but an abstract interpretation, but you always knew that she was her own character in her own right. and the fact that she represented an archetype, well...flash was the childish comedian, gl the stoic soldier, superman the superhero, batman the outsider(that secretly wants to be part of the team) etc. for a series like this with such an enormous cast(jlu) you have to give the viewer something he knews till you build up the deeper character stuff(only happened to a small degree with diana, i know, but i see where they were coming from).

Milage avries, I thought DCAU Diana was awsome. In fact one of my biggets complaints was that we didn't get more of her. Bruce and Clark got their own series, they didn'tneed to hog so much screne time.

Is she the same as her comic version? No, very different, but then again the DCAU universe is very different. I like her stealing the armor, she was determained to save innocents instead of sitting around protected by the gods. She defied her mother's commands to do what she knew was right, like she always does. And watching her deal with man's world was always interesting.

That is a really nice scene from Robin's Reckoning. But I'd say there were still lots of moments in the later DCAU series that showed his non-dickery.

Like that episode with the Flush gang in JLU, and he's told he has to kill the little girl in order to save everyone. So what does he do? He let's her know what's happening, and as she's going to die anyway, he holds her hand and sits with her until the end.

Bat-dickery and Bat-loveliness go hand-in-hand, IMO, but the dickery level rising over the years makes sense for DCAU Batman. It seems an unavoidable trajectory somehow, what with the way his relationship with Dick evolved over the years. (And in Batman Beyond, you've got all the Return of the Joker business to factor into all his bitterness and push-people-away-ness.)

That and the Return of the Joker flashback bit are the two greatest Batman scenes in the DCAU.

Exactly. What happened to Tim basically broke him, he didn't start to heal until Terry came along, thus we end up with the scene at end of Return of the Joker.

Although that is logical, that it seems to be an "unavoidable trajectory", bear in mind that this scene was supposed to be what, around a decade ago from their continuity? So in ten years of crimefighting, Batman was still at home with his Bruce side and managed to have a pretty good relationship with Robin, and was a moderately well-adjusted hero.

Right, but there was still conflict. Robin's later years, no matter what medium, always seem to involve a conflicted relationship with Batman, and even in the non-flashback bits of Robin's Reckoning, you've got Batman being a dick in that acts-like-a-dick-but-it's-all-because-he-cares kind of way.

He doesn't tell Dick what's going on with Zucco, and just shuts him out, leaving Dick to get all pissed and rebellious. That's what I mean about Bat-dickery going hand-in-hand with what I have now decided I like to call "Bat-loveliness".

Bruce with Ace of the RFG, making sure that the last few minutes of life of a scared little girl has won't be spent alone is possibly my favourite DCAU moment.

But yes, definitely one of my favourite moments too.

Yeah, my reaction to DCAU is pretty much the same. Though most of the time I'm okay with pretending nothing in the Beyond-verse ever happened and Dick, Tim, and Bruce stayed an only moderately screwed up family. I'd like to believe, in any case, that this Bruce didn't have to end up quite so empty and alone.

Not always a Batdick. Remember when he sang "I Am Blue?" That's probably one of my favorite Batman moments ever. And the time with Ace? That was sweet.

It's not incest as such; he's not related to Babs by blood, marriage, or adoption. That said, it *was* kind of weird, and I do wonder if any of the Batman Beyond comics elaborated on it (and what Jim had to say about it if anything!).

eh, there's a difference between fanon and canon, you know? There are fanon things that I'm happy to read but would be horrified if they were enshrined in ACTUAL canon.

(I pass no comment on the actual relationship in question.)

I think B:TAS is the best superhero animated series ever and some of the best written Batman ever (surpassing the Batdick/Batgod that the comics made him become as well) and I hated HATED that the Bruce Wayne from TAS supposedly became the old bastard we saw in Batman Beyond. I like to pretend BB doesn't exist no matter how many people love it.
