Clea ponders Corazon Aquino
The recent death of former Philippines President Corazon Aquino got me thinking of a line from MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #20, when Clea finds ruling the Dark Dimension can be a hassle.

Marvel Comics Presents #20 - Page 27

Marvel Comics Presents #20 - Page 28

The rest of the story is Clea fighting a monster that Dormammu created to guard an "awful treasure." It turns out the treasure is a beautiful flower. Clea wonders why Dormammu was frightened/repulsed by a beautiful object.

What's Clea up to these days?

Damn, I really liked Clea. I don't think Strange has to be in a relationship with her, but I wish she'd show up... but then, given trends from the 90s on, they'd just do it to kill, mutilate, or depower her. So maybe it's better than she's hidden in the toybox.

How delightfully literate-- the name "Sepulchrave" is taken from Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, and "Shelmerdine" from Virginia Woolf's Orlando (I think.)

If there's a line more fun to say than than "You will restrain the use of your shadow-powers in Shelmerdine's satrap, Sepulchrave", I don't know what it is.

This was written by a fellow named Peter B. Gillis -- the dictionary definition for "highly literate comic scripting" is a picture of him.

(Neil Gaiman has followed in Peter's footsteps in several respects...though for some strange reason, Neil decided to forego cult favorite status in favor of international superstardom.)

Do they ever explain the flower?

Not in the 8-page story. I don't think it was brought up again.
