The reason that phonetically-written accents are problematic is generally that they give an impression of an uneducated, ignorant character - "how hard is it to speak properly?" kind of thing. And I gotta say, an inability to pronounce the "th" sound is a lot less telling to me about Chuma's intellect than the fact that he tosses around phrases like "such petty insignificances as treacherous whispers". And of course his bracket-enclosed conversation with Minerva is intensely sophisticated with no sound substitution required. (The other problem would be that phonetically-written accents are damn annoying to read, but I'll take Chuma over Rogue any day.)
The art gets pretty inept in places, though, I give you that. I'm particularly fond of the one where he looks like a palette-swapped Darkseid. Black skin usually wrinkles less with age than white skin, and no skin that I've ever seen wrinkles in crags.
