so, as all comic protagonists will do, swamp thing once had dudes from the government gunning for him.

and so hired a man who'd know what to do.

i have to say, i love lex's expression.

also, the O_O expressions on everyone's faces. apparently, bald is a shocking thing.

so, anyhow, they're off to their consultancy, while swamp thing pulls a poison ivy on gotham city because they've got abby arcane under arrest, since relations with a swamp thing are considered bestiality and you can be arrested for that.

(yes, there's a fight with batman, which I think's been posted. doesn't end so well for the bat, forcing him to take another tack...)

heh, reminds me of what Lex said to Firestorm, once: " If you don't want your powers neutralized, you shouldn't write papers about them. "

also, apparently Lex's " you don't know from invulnerability " sparked a small tongue-in-cheek discussion on alt.usage.english about speech patterns and Luthor's religion. what an internet, huh?

nine minutes, fifteen seconds.

most of that, clearly, was taken drawing the specifications for the gun.

and some annotations, no doubt, about how to modify it for anti-kryptonian ordinance. if, you know, that's ever needed or anything.

so, anyhow, plot happens, Batman threatens the government railroading the bestiality conviction by pulling a " so, bestiality... hey, i think that means you'll have to arrest, like, I dunno, everyone who knows an alien superhero... oh yeah, that includes the dude in metropolis, doesn't it? you know the one... "

and so swamp thing seems to be able to walk away from this, right?

yeahno.

bang.

you know, maybe it's the unidentifiable facial expression and the red, but the shootist is kinda giving me deadshot-vibes. weird.

one page of rumination later...

now, it turns out he survives that, because he blind-jumped to a planet with a green frequency that just so happened to be in the neighborhood of the one he'd been retuned to. but as that's pretty much luck... it's plainly obvious that given 10 minutes, a notepad, and a pen... Lex Luthor can solve any given problem.

well, except how to love.

and meryl's codec number.

but any problem, really.

bonus: transformers: hearts of steel gives us a rendition of what happens, apparently, when the 'bots and the 'cons wake up... earlier. (and then go to sleep, and wake up less earlier.)

Ah, Alan Moore at the height of his powers. I remember how incredible this stuff was when it first appeared. It's ironic that at the same time that the movie showed Swampy at his most campy, while the comic was breaking new ground in what comics could be.

Of course, this let Moore do stuff like his Adam Strange dissection, with most of the issue in Rannian...but you could figure out the dialog by paying attention (and like most of Moore's work at the time, re-cast Strange's whole concept with a few simple panels).

Isn't he actually a specialist in *failing* to destroy an indestructible being, though? I mean, Superman's still around, the one time he 'died' it wasn't Luthor, and he's got some fairly well-known (if not initially obvious) weaknesses.

Given that Swampy when between bodies is essentially a spiritual being able to make journeys to the afterlife, this does make you wonder if an ordinary communications scrambler could be modified to retune, say, Deadman, the same way. Does Luthor have soul-scrambling technology?

	He's a specialist in attempting to destroy an indestructible being. He knows what has not worked. And what has not worked on Superman might just possibly work on someone else ... And as to your second question, in Maggin's second novel, he worked out a means of teleportation that involved pretty clearly spiritual/magical techniques, so it wouldn't be beyond him. Oooh. Haven't read any Swamp Thing. This is great. (Did he always think with ellipses?)

Somewhere, I think on the old scans_daily, I heard that Lex Luthor once figured out how to escape from jail with nothing but a pen and a pad of paper, but wouldn't do it, just because then the next time he got caught, they wouldn't give him any pen and paper to make a new plan with. I like CEO Luthor, but pre-Crisis Luthor clearly has his own brand of awesome.

	You remember correctly. (And without the pad and pen, he'd go nuts.) It's from the novel Last Son of Krypton by Eliot S! Maggin, long-time Superman writer. While it's sometimes guilty of the worst excesses of pre-Crisis Superman storytelling, it's still a neat read. (Reply to this) (Parent)
