Is the whole issue like this? Ick.

Not that it isn't interesting to see these pencils(though they're so tight there's really not that much that we don't see in the inks), but, this "pop-up" commentary is not very interesting. There's something weird about doing that with something that's still more or less current. That bit about the contrast between Barry's and Hal's deaths? No, REALLY, Johns? Wow, I'd have never gotten that out of the fact you said it straight out in the dialogue. I am not sure how much use such things are with Johns anyway, given his habit of having dialogue like characterization talking points quite often. There's nothing mysterious about what he means. He repeats it over and over. So why commentary?

No, the first two features are the origins of Kilowog and Arisia.

This, the last feature, is the 'director's commentary' for Blackest Night #0.

this "pop-up" commentary is not very interesting.

Pretty much. Their hands seem too tied by not being able to reveal anything about the storyline. Other than the Atom thing, this is stuff we all already knew.

"Why do so many characters die? Why do so many come back?"

You're joking, right, Johns? Ask Ambush Bug, he knows: SALES.

Awwww. Poor sad Krypto.

I do kinda disbelieve that the whole death parade of recent years was a carefully orchestrated plan.

He's not claiming it is. He's coming up with in-fiction rationale for it.

Again, it's the dark and the light of the DCU, really exemplified by Batman and Green Lantern.

HEE.

Not like I'm all that enthusiastic about that line when it's Clark, either - I have issues with characters being given in-universe importance that makes no sense in-universe and is based entirely on their meta - but at least Clark has the meta and the actual in-character personality to back it up, you know?

But Johns doesn't have a mancrush on Clark, you see.

WELL, actually he does, as shown in ACTION COMICS and the upcoming SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN. He writes one of the best Clarks out there, honestly.

I don't deny he really likes Clark and writes him well, but it never seemed to come close to his uber stick-him-everywhere mancrush on Hal. To me, anyway.

nothing to do with quality, i just think it'd be funny.

It must suck to be Hal, you can never criticise anyone ever.

"Bruce maybe you shouldn't spy on all us heroes."

"At least I never killed thousands of people and nearly destroyed all life in the universe."

".........dick"

*crunch*

Hal: 'Now you're Batwoman.'

Clark: 'Great Rao, Parallax is back!'

Hal: 'No, he was just pissing me off.'

Clark: '... We...we're allowed to do that?'

Diana: 'No!'

While I actually enjoyed this "Director's Cut" feature, the front cover features a three way battle between Carol Ferris, Atrocious, and Indigo.

Guess which three characters and Corps never even *appear* in the book?

All three comics' covers will form one scene, the Red Lantern story is in Issue two along with Carol's while the Indigo story is in Issue one.

The cover's a lie!

Absolutely right! Hal's funeral, where he was buried as a despited, hated criminal, obviously serves as a perfect contrast between the two heroes post mortem!

Except it's not.

Shit, you're right, I keep forgetting we're operating on DCT. The Didio Continuity Timeline.

Please return your trays to the upright position and forget anything happened between the years of 1994 and 2000. You guys don't care about any of that, right?

Well, yes. That was Hal Jordan from when he was still kind of a rookie in the GLC, and he was kinda upset about the whole "Oh shit, you mean I did what before I died?" thing.

Hal wasn't there. So who told him what his funeral was like, lying through their teeth...?
Ah.
"It was an awful scene, Hal. The Teen Titans put grafitti all over your tomb. The Justice Society lined up, one after the other, to spit on your grave. Alan Scott said you weren't fit to carry on his name. The Outsiders and Doom Patrol got together for an impromptu orgy as the coffin was being lowered, and you don't want to KNOW what those stains were on your statue. We tried to clean them up, but it was a good thing you blew up that statue..."
"Really, Bruce?"
"But--but-- that's not the way it happened, Bruce..."
"Clark. Spare Hal the most revolting details. The same way I'd NEVER reveal the photos of Mxyzptlk and how he transformed you and Lois in the middle of your honeymoon....right, Clark?"
"Oh...? Oh. Right. Absolutely, Bruce. Hal, I'm sorry to say but Bruce is trying to spare your feelings and not tell you the worst that happened..."

Ok, so I dug this up to show a friend and noticed where Johns is commenting on how Ivans version of Barry's funeral looks great. Something occurs to me though, was Barry's funeral ever actually shown before now? The way I figured it went was

CoIE - Barry dies, Wally becomes Flash.
Off panel, never shown -- Barry's funeral, Wally choosing to reveal Barry as Flash to the world
Flash Vol. 3 #1 -- Wally as flash

Am I missing an issue or two in between there?

The whole timeframe was confused. They weren't even too sure who would be the next Flash before they settled on Wally.
