The reason for his embarrassment at buying Valentine's candy for himself is that Valentine's Day is a day where girls give chocolate (usually homemade, though sometimes storebought) to the boys they like. It's considered massively loserly for men to buy their own chocolate; it's like having a romantic dinner by yourself, pretty much.
Also: In this dude's defense, I find that old person in the picture to be scary, too.
