Slade Wilson and Tara Markov: A Love Story

In this post I will be showing the classic romance of Slade Wilson and Tara Markov, by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.

First off is The New Teen Titans #34.

Terra is upset that even though she's been with the Titans for several months, they've refused to tell her their secrets or treat her as a true equal.

Deathstroke is with his hostage when...

The other Teen Titans arrive.

Deathstroke battles them until...

Their story continues in The New Teen Titans #39. The Titans are battling Brother Blood's cult.

Later, Terra is with the Titans. Wally is leaving the team, and Dick is staying but retiring his Robin identity.

In Tales of the Teen Titans #42, Terra and Beast Boy are training.

In Tales of the Teen Titans #43 Dick is attacked by Deathstroke, who now knows his civilian identity. Dick manages to escape, and Deathstroke goes after him.

Dick tries finding the other Titans, but they've all been captured.

In Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #3 the rest of the Titans find themselves being held hostage by H.I.V.E.

Meanwhile, Jericho and Dick (now in his new Nightwing identity) are starting to invade H.I.V.E's fortress.

Deathstroke doesn't know Wintergreen is being held at gunpoint by Adeline.

Jericho and Nightwing are inside the fortress when...

The Jericho-possessed Deathstroke frees the rest of the Titans.

This is from Tales of the Teen Titans #55. It's written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by Ron Randall.

Slade is on trial for kidnapping the senator back in #34, but he is able to get off by hiring a Deathstroke impersonator, causing doubt as to if he was the Deathstroke behind the kidnapping. In the end, the judge (Adrian Chase) is only able to sentence him to one year for the illegal possession of the firearms found in his penthouse apartment.

While in prison Slade is attacked by a vengeful Beast Boy, but he manages to escape. The next day he is released after some of the senators he did undercover work for cleared him of the gun charge.

Slade meets Beast Boy in the arranged spot, but not as Deathstroke. Slade refuses to fight back, and Beast Boy is unable to kill him.

Why is it that I hear her having an accent like a Arlene Sorkin/ Clara Bow hybrid with a dash of PURE EVIL.

I do like her design though, the buck teeth. Very distinct, people in comics have gotten so indistinguishable and bland. MORE VARIETY please. More physical differences.

I'm actually thinking she would have been played well by Bijou Philips, around the time she was in BLACK & WHITE.

Also: EEWWW, Slade.

Man I had no idea Terra was such a bitch, though I now get why they honor her even though she does not deserve it.

Yeah, I liked that too. I'm kinda a sucker for enemies just talking instead of fighting.

I suppose it's a good thing I'm not a comic writer, cause I'd be fighting off the impulses for enemies decide to resolve things like adults instead of fighting every other issue.

From what I read, Terra was introduced shortly after Kitty Pryde. Kitty was played for the obvious cute and spunky factor. Terra was meant to mimic that and subvert it.

:) Ever wonder what it would've looked like if their roles were reversed?

A lot of beaver jokes (buck-teeth and all) over at DC, and Claremont being accused of anti-Semitism over at Marvel.

But on a less whimsical note...

A lot more dead. Earth manipulation is a pretty dangerous superpower, but compared to someone who can phase something out, stick it into the space your skull's occupying, and phase it back in...

If "shortly" means "about three years later," yes.

But of course, the entire point of NTT was competing with the X-Men. Only it was NTT that had readable, and intelligent, writing(but X-Men had the grander plots). X-Men was like a soap, but NTT was more like a primetime drama.

Wow. Having never read that story before, I'm having a rather fresh reaction to it.

And honestly reflecting on the levels of FanDumb it created. It's like the Titan's misconceptions about Terra infected the fanbase itself in some areas. And, really, they couldn't have laid the relationship between her and Slade any thicker if they had a shot of the pair of them in bed.

You know, there are many blamed for the "darkening" of DC, IDENTITY CRISIS of course being where it hit the not just breaking, but vomiting, point, Alan Moore and Frank Miller usually being blamed(though post-Crisis, I'd really blame Dan Jurgens, Mike Grell, and a few others). But the truth was that it was just the "Marvelizing" of DC. And that began with Marv Wolfman, who also wrote COIE. A lot of people forget that, as bright and round as everything looked, NTT was actually a pretty dark, dark book much of the time.

Coming from me that's not a criticism. I LIKED NTT, a lot, as a teen. But it is the truth: it started with Wolfman, and interesting that these things often come through Slade. This, IDENTITY CRISIS, and let's not forget the very first issue of INIFINITE CRISISS and the graphic impalement, between the tits, of Phantom Lady.

How do you recognize the evil teenager? She's the one wearing make-up and smoking! Thank you, Marv, for that enlightening commentary.

Adeline Wilson is piles and piles of awesome and I wish she hadn't got forgotten. But I forget, only men are allowed to mark people. (What? Slade Wilson was taught by his wife? Rose Wilson's most important parent issues were about her mother? Surely you jest.)

One of the things I love about this? The many, many times Perez and Wolfman pull the rug right out from under you.

Hey, we've got a new member on board! And she's plucky and spunky and... a traitor who's was planted to spy on everyone. Huh.

But, but obviously she's been manipulated into this, right? They've been spreading hints that Terra's changing her mind, and you just know that at the last minute she'll pull a heel-face turn and end up with the people who really accept her as family... oooooooor she'll turn out to be a cold-blooded little psychopath who betrays and later tries to murder her teammates with a gleeful little smile on her face. Okay.

What, she got crushed by falling rocks? Please, even if this wasn't one of the oldest gimmicks in comic history, her power revolves around falling rocks! We all know how this goes; they never find a body, she'll disappear for six month tops, and then come back to make life miserable for...

Oh. They DO find a body. She's really dead. Damn.

And as a side note, I really miss this version of Deathstroke - the guy who wasn't insane, who actually had a code and morals despite being a cold-blooded killer, and genuinely cared about his family.

No-one with bunny teeth could possibly be at all heroic!

That death scene is pretty sloppily written. They beat us over the head with the fact that she's INSANELY EVIL and UNCONTROLLABLY CORRUPT and SHE DOESN'T EVEN THINK THE SAME WAY WE DO, and then expect us to learn some kind of lesson through her death.

All I've learned is that Gar Logan, even in the old stories, was still an unsufferable little prick. More annoying than S-Boy Prime, even.

That was great, actually. Really enjoyable! I <3 Wolfman.

Mad crazy make-up smoking Tara is kind of adorable, too. She's just so extreme!

(Also: calling the hypothetical union between the teenage psychopath and the old grey-haired mercenary "making love" just makes me want to ruffle Beast Boy's hair and buy him an ice-pop.)

This really shows Wolfman at the top of his game. In addition to showing Tara flipping out and slinking around Slade's secret lair in negligees, you can also see Raven starting to change into her father's daughter, setting up the next big storyline.

It's also disgusting to remember how DC treated Wolfman, not too long after this. He, Alan Moore, Frank Miller and Howard Chaykin signed a letter to DC protesting their new comics rating system; DC responded by firing Wolfman as editor, rationalizing that he was a "second-tier" writer, even though he had co-created their best-selling book and wrote Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Due to an unfortunate issue with deliveries, the comic shop I went to had the NTT Annual, where Terra has a throwaway reference to working for Deathstroke, the week BEFORE the NTT issue above where the big reveal was made, so it was sort of spoiled for me.
