Super-Villain Nazi Team-Up!

This is from Super-Villain Team-Up #16 and #17. Both issues are written by Peter Gillis. #16 is illustrated by Carmine Infantino, and the cover is by Al Milgrom. #17 is illustrated by  Arvell Jones and Bruce Patterson, and the cover is by Keith Pollard.

Later, Yousuf is forced to walk in front of the other prisoners, including his ex-girlfriend Rachel, who think he's a collaborator.

Later, the Red Skull shows Yousuf the immense secret project he was looking for when he was captured.

The Red Skull explains it's all for the creation of a second Cosmic Cube.

The Hate-Monger recounts how he saved the Red Skull after Dr. Doom left him on the moon to die.  He mentions how the Skull didn't believe who he was at first, but that he helped the Skull in several schemes against Captain America, all of which the Skull lost.

Meanwhile, Yousuf tricks his guard into removing the implant and escapes. He tries freeing the other prisoners, but they think it's just a trick and so he starts to leave without them when he gets shot by one of the guards. A horrified Rachell starts to attack the guards, and the other prisoners join in. Meanwhile Yousuf, still alive, makes it to the docks and steals the boat. Hours later, he reaches a U.S. Cutter on patrol...

The second issue begins with the Red Skull and the Hate Monger having kidnapped Dr. Clinton, one of the founding members of A.I.M. and the last person remaining who helped shape the Cube.

Rachel explains how after the events of last issue she was tortured for leading the revolt, but weeks later she managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Clinton is hooked up into the machine making the Cube. Arnim Zola declares that "The outer shell of the Cube is almost complete! It is now the perfect prison! Within that matrix shall be captured the mysterious, omindimensional X-Element which is the essence of the Cosmic Cube!"

SHIELD gets ready to attack Exile Island.

The SHIELD strikeforce starts to attack.

Rachel sees Yousuf.

As the last SHIELD jet clears the island, the incendiary bomb goess off.

Peter Gillis was one of the best writers at Marvel back in the day; it's a damn dirty shame that he's no longer in comics, but given their current state, I'm not sure that I can blame him.

Since people like Priest, Stern or Busiek can't get hired by Marvel anymore, he's not really alone.

Why not Busiek?

And Priest just plain retired, as I recall, although obviously, he and Marvel don't have the best relationship.

Kurt Busiek signed an exclusivity contract with DC a few years ago.

Roger Stern was fired from Marvel by a previous EIC and has since written several books under Quesada, but does most of his work for a European publisher.

Priest hasn't written anything for anyone since 2005.

Don't spread rumors.

I'm I the only one who would want to see Hitler back as the leader of Hydra?

You know, you would think with Dark Reign going down they would use it as a platform to relaunch a "Super-Villain Team Up" monthly. Did "MODOK's Eleven" do really poorly or something?

If it didn't have Wolverine on the cover, you can more or less assume it sold poorly.

To be fair, this takes place how many years after WW2 ended? He may have started in the intervening time period.

Maybe each Hitler clone only paints one subject. This one does still life, that one does pictures of sad giant-eyed Mexican children, the yellow one on the far right only does clowns in watercolor.

Untrue. He had a few cigar-box-picture-quality sappy mother-and-child paintings to his, uh, credit. Just as mediocre, kitschy and without soul as his others.

If I cover the top of his hair.

Why do I see a younger J Jonah Jameson in Hatemonger. The panel when he took off his mask, I got the image of the word bubbles screaming PARKER!!!

"Hitler wants his mustache back!"

I remember this story from when I was a kid. It was the first time I realized you could have an interesting story without a "hero" at all.

so the whole point of all Red Skull's machniations here was... just to trap hitler in a cube?

For years, I thought the Hatemonger just had a goofy triangle headdress. Someone had to point out to me that it was a black version of a KKK hood.

You know, that bit near the end where the Skull is torturing himself over his upcoming betrayal is actually rather touching, in a somewhat twisted way. He doesn't WANT to betray this man; this man is his inspiration - he wants to remain loyal, but can't. It's just, well, the man in question is Adolph Hitler, which kind of messes up the touching part - but were it just about anyone ELSE, it would be touching.

Well, that's almost redundant.

As far as "Fascist Degradation of Helpless Human Trash," which Marvel in the 70s did quite well, that rates alongside the Body Banks in MICRONAUTS and the grand plan Torgo describes in the last Tomb of Dracula of making humans livestock. (which Paul Cornell obviously remembers because he has something making reference to it in "Vampire State.")

As these were the last two issues, as it was one of those weirder books that started under Roy Thomas' EIC era, as I see the name Jim Shooter, and as the last issue seems very rushed and full of summaries...Shooter killed this and made them rush to the end, like with many other books(TOMB OF DRACULA, for instance), didn't he?
