Fury is Earl Popovich, Piper's ex-boyfriend/partner in crime who got arrested after their first job. James no last name ever given was Piper's architect boyfriend through a fairly long storyarc. Far as I know, James just kinda disappeared.

Why is James drawn all glowy-transluscent in the last few panels?

Inking error. It makes me laugh though, like he's some kind of radioactive zombie.

The power to turn shadows bright red.

He is now.. The Anti-Ninja.

I thought that he'd gone nuts and imagined the dude alive when he was still under the rubble.

If it wasn't super-powers or the favor of the Gods, I would like to think that it was a symbolic glowing indicating the huge and touching significance that he represents in wossname-ex-villain's life.

I am a relentless optimist!

Oh hey, I remember this. Did we ever see James again or found out what happened to him? I've always liked that Piper hooked up with an average, vaguely boring looking accountant type.
Which, now that I think about it, would also be a great hook for a rmantic sitcom: I married a Super-Villain! Don't tell me that doesn't have Flash Rogues written all over it.

Oh thank you so much! I've been kicking myself for not saving this off old scans daily. I heart Hartley and this little bit of worst love triangle ever.

Early Cassaday art is still pretty (and a bit static :L).

Piper really does have a type, doesn't he? Three dark-haired boyfriends, two of whom were taller and broader than he is.

Sad to say, wasn't this the last appearance of James-no-last-name-given? I know that Geoff Johns mentioned that they broke up off panel in some interview, which is annoying, but that's the fate of a supporting character's supporting character.

You see him one more time after this (if I remember correctly; it was for Linda Park's funeral), and then James Nolastname is not seen again. Piper just pals around with the Trickster after that.
