Interesting. Very interesting. Is this McDuffie's final issue on JL or was that ended earlier?

Still, good way to explain the sudden influx. I like it.

This is McDuffie's final issue (and DC actually gave him an extra issue; Wein's arc was originally solicited to start this issue but got pushed back one issue.)

Next is Wein, then Robinson.

Zee and Mari were hilarious together in this. Everything the Detroit League should have been, between the two of them. The plots have been shaky to say the least, but Robinson's got a high bar to match when it comes to character work, particularly the last few issues since the Milestone types first showed up.

Even when he's a cowboy, Batman is prepared for everything. And a single-action railgun? Talk about an anachronism.

So the original DC/Milestone crossover is semi-canon now? Cool. Think we need to have a review post about it?

Why IS Batman a gun wielding near diety killing cowboy with a chess piece on his torso?

Alternate universe / imaginary / story Batman. He's a cowboy!

Paladin is an alternate Batman created by Anansi a few issues ago. there were other alternate JLA characters, the crackiest of which was a Captain Marvel analogue but instead of a kid that turned into a super-powered adult, he was a white guy that turned into a super-powered black man.

he wasn't a Captain Marvel analogue. He was the character DC considered creating as their first black superhero.

ah, my mistake. I thought that since his powers came from using a magic word that he was patterned after Captain Marvel.

Nope. Possibly influenced by him, since the original Black Bomber idea, as I understand it, had him changing against his will, but he's a real 70s concept (who was scrapped, and replaced with Black Lightning).

Alternate reality Bruce Wayne who didn't watch Zorro the night his parents were killed, he watched a cowboy movie. Now he fights crime as Paladin, using his absurd wealth to create awesome guns rather than bat-motif "non-lethal" weapons.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; it could only be a Lone Ranger movie (when swapping out swashbuckling for cowboy action, you don't just plug any old western in), but I don't think they specified.

That being said, if the Western had that much affect on THAT Bruce, you'd think our Bruce might have developed swords as a weapon of choice since he saw Zorro! :) (I know, I know, the movie being Zorro is a relatively recent addition, but even so, it's a nice image. Reminds me of the issue of DCAU Batman where he takes down the Cavalier, and as he swings away Batman thinks "YOU don't get to play Zorro in this town, that's MY job")

Batman used to keep Bat-condoms next to the Batarangs, but after a couple of times reaching into the wrong belt compartment when fighting the Joker, he removed them so as not to give his villains the wrong idea.

I like how the "frayed strands of continuity" which will take "months, if not years" to correct effectively provides any writer using Milestone characters an out if their portrayals are inconsistent with their past history.

Ten minutes of watching that show should make it very clear to anyone that everything is Torchwood's fault.

And so DC lies to us again. Didn't they say the whole Worlds Collide Crossover was not going to be canon and referenced again. Sigh.

On the other hand I love the Milestoners and Paladin.

When Diana was blinded, she did a big sparring match against the League to prove to them that she wasn't less valuable. Batman's part was shooting at her with a gun, which she deflected with her bracers. So Batman is two out of three with god-killing.

Well, actually, he got Clark to do his dirty work with that one. I don't think it works if he does it by proxy.

Oh, really? I could have sworn it was Batman doing the shooting*, but I've misremembered stuff like that before, so I bow to your superior knowledge. I suppose having Clark do it makes sense, if he thought Diana wouldn't deflect it Clark could grab it. Faster than a speeding bullet and all that.

*I guess the image of Batman with a gun is so odd that I keep inserting it into other places.

Well, DC's succeeded in their Pavlovian training with me in that seeing Bruce or Batman with a gun spells "WRONG" to the inside of my bones.

"He shot him. This is so wrong." </ freak out>

Y'know what other Bat uses guns and might be interesting for Alternate Bruce to meet?

Oh, I know all that, obviously. I've been following their appearances.

What I'm saying is that the in-story reason for them to be there at all, as outlined here by McDuffie, is very fragile indeed. Basically if this one guy's concentration gets broken, they're outta there.

Since McDuffie retains the rights to those characters, it seems like he's giving himself an easy out, continuity-wise, to yank 'em whenever he's had enough of whatever nonsense is going on behind the scenes.

He said as much explicitly back when the Milestone characters being added to the DCU was first announced.

As (sadly) deficient as this was, it got me hooked on the Milestone characters. If DC doesn't want McDuffie to write a decent JLA book, they should just give him a sort of Milestone anthology and let him go nuts.
