The Titans #14
In the previous issue, Nightwing questioned peoples commitments to the team and told anyone who didn't want to commit to leave, causing Jesse to do so. He then feels over-stressed and heads back to Gotham for advice from his old mentor, so when danger strikes, Garth takes over the leadership role.

I think these are fun because you get to see the Titans rooms inside the tower. I love Toni's stuffed toys and Grant's room having all these archer themes and being a total wreck (which, at first, made me think it was Roys room), Kory being very stylish and feminine and Roy's little room sign. Even if that Ollie picture is freaky.

Followed by Dick doing something borderline dickery, but very self aware. That said, I love Dick's room having a Nightwing symbol.

I will be the first to admit that I wasn't bothered about Aqualad/Tempest, but I think one of the best things about this is it highlights that he can be very capable despite having a bad rep, while understanding the position Dick is so often put in.

So now it's off to Gotham, with Dick proving again that he is the bat who will ask for help if he needs it - though only from certain people.

Anyway, fight goes down, everyone but Garth gets out and there's general freaking out. Cue compliments about him and him being able to laugh at himself.

Oh, those wacky Titans.

But I love that conversation with the Bats. Bruce seems completely clueless, but over the years he really does know how to talk to Dick in situations like this. The key is to just say something cryptic and then he'll do all the talking himself. He's the Robin who can't shut up.

Also I do love the Titan's rooms--and that Kory's seems to have been decorated with pictures of herself.

I love that everyone in the Batfamily seems to know this as well.

given that he started the "Holy..." thing, and that he did pioneer being the witty Robin...you can imagine how he is when he's not being a dick. or a Dick. haha.

Donna was trying to prove she could be 'wild' side, so they had an on/off thing during this series.

Yeah, I get that it happened, it just seems so ill-fitting. Then again, this was before Terry and her kid got smoked, I guess?

Garth is so the greatest Titan ever! Also, I love how Dick is just listing girls. "Do you mean Donna? Kory? Clancy? That girl on the subway? The one from the park? The telemarketer who was hitting on me? The twenty other girls who have propositioned me since last week?"

There's nothing about these scans I don't like. I love the interior of the rooms. I love the sign on Roy's door. I love Garth. I love Dick asking Bruce for advice and freaking out, and Bruce cutting him off by telling him he trusts him to make the right choice. I love the phrasing of that sentence, it's much more precise than a general "I trust you" would be, and that makes it much more meaningful in that situation.

There was a lot about the later Titans issue I could've done without, but this cracks me up every time.

LOLOLOLOL = everything.

Oh, Garth. I miss him. I miss Dolphin and their baby too. Where ARE they now?

Also, why does he and Dick have weird hair here?

Hate to be the wet blanket again, but there's just... so much to dislike in this. (IMHO of course)

Garth running around into people's room, instead of I don't know, using the sort of alarm any Titans Tower has had for such a situation.

Arsenal's room not having a lock?

There's a Nightwing logo on Dick's door, not out of cuteness, but because he hasn't revealed his ID to half his team mates, which just doesn't sit well with me, never mind that all his team-mates are proven heroes in their own right.

Roy disrespecting Garth like that, and in front of him? Yeesh, no.

Dick reacting The only one who might call the ghastly Huntress one night stand a part of his "social life" would be the person who wrote it. What a surprise. Dick babbling like that in front of Bruce is just all sorts of... contrived sounding. Jesse REALLY isn't worth mentioning, so why do it? Ditto Clancy (Barely started? It NEVER started). There seems to be a lack of a concept that Dick has friends who happen to be women, there IS no sexual/relationship component to them.

If I'm a waterbreather and I'm caught in an explosion which knocks me into the water, I would not want my friends, at least two of who can fly to go a sodding LOOK for me in case I'm just wounded, not stand around going "Oh he must be dead" to the extent we're a heartbeat away from Roy shouging "Dibs on the stuff in his room!"

No. Just, no.

I'm going to have to start doing 'not safe for icon_uk' warnings at this rate! I'm sure one day I'll find something you like. It's going to be my scans_daily goal.

Garth has just found out he's going to die, so I took it to mean he panicked, considering how much crap they all went through the previous issue.

It's Arsenal. Roy is not what you would call careful in The Titans series - at all. He doesn't seem to have any security for anything in it. I'd say it was OOC but it shows up in Green Arrow too, so I guess it's just a quirk. As for disrepect? Again, it's Roy. The guys disrepects Batman. Garth never stood a chance.

It does get said earlier in the issue that this was something Garth had to do alone, so in context, I can see why that's their instant thought, though Roy's reaction irritated me because with the rest, I can see them going to look, but I agree it feels very forced.

Oh, Dick's love life. While I have not read the Huntress business, I can see why he might be attracted to her. I'll have to see if I can find it, to see if I really dislike it. I rather liked Jesse and Dick's relationship (though in a platonic way) and while the babbling bothered, I like that he went to Bruce and given the timing of this being fairly early in Nightwing, I can see his insecurities showing which I find fine. And he and Clancy did go on a date fairly recently at this point and I would count it simply for the timing of the issue. Dick does have a lot of female friends but looking at his early Nightwing stuff, he also tends to find a lot of them attractive, which I suppose is fairly normal.

The lack of identity thing never sat right with me either.

If you keep posting Devin Grayson material, you're on a hiding to nothing I'm afraid, I've never made a secret of not liking her style at all, and her Titans and Nightwing runs most of all.

Roy disrespects Batman because he thinks he's too much of a hardass ALL THE TIME. That's quite different from being actively rude to a long standing friend and team-mate like that.

Dick being attracted to Huntress is one thing, but being attracted enough to her whilst being involved with Babs, and having a one night stand based on apparently unbearable sexual chemistry is so completely OOC for Dick, it's absurd.

Dick and Jesse as friends IS interesting, but this implies that Dick sees it as more than that, which I just can't see.

When did Dick and Clancy ever date? They described each other as "pizza buddies", with no aspirations for a relationship.

Again, this seems to be viewed through Devin-filtered glasses. She has noted that she thinks Dick is such a supremely physical person that he has a "fight or fuck" reaction to ANY physical contact, overlooking completely that the thing which anyone who IS as physical as Dick is, is absolute self-discipline.

Nightwing didn't leave him the alarm code.

Arsenal's room not having a lock?

He would have left a tie hanging on the doorknob, but, well, he's Roy. He didn't have a tie handy.

There's a Nightwing logo on Dick's door, not out of cuteness, but because he hasn't revealed his ID to half his team mates, which just doesn't sit well with me, never mind that all his team-mates are proven heroes in their own right.

There is a precedent for this going back to the Danny Chase days, however. I prefer the pre-Crisis no-secrets-here approach, too, but it didn't work so well with Terra.

Roy disrespecting Garth like that, and in front of him? Yeesh, no.

Okay, this objection I can't understand. Making fun of gillhead Garth is a Titans tradition! Him as leader—that’s the break from the past that takes getting used to.

The rest, yeah. Dick's confusion about his "social life" is cute but out of character.

There wouldn't be an alarm code, just alarm triggers, like fire alarms.

IIRC Danny Chase knew Dick's identity from the get-go. There's one issue where Danny looks up Titans Tower computer records of the various members origins and Nightwings origin carefully omits any identifying data, and the record makes no reference to who he really is, but that's because it's a computer record which could theoretically be hacked. Danny himself already knew.

There's nothing to suggest Roy is teasing Garth here (which I would accept), everything about what he says seems to be being said quite seriously.

IIRC, Dick started enforcing the "no real names" rule in Titans Tower because of Lian's civilian baby-sitter. At any rate she was around by that stage, so the symbol makes sense. Besides this and Winick's Outsiders, are there any more occasions where Dick conceals his identity from team-mates? I'm asking because the rest of the Bats tend to fall either firmly on the side of "secret identity is secret" or have no concept of a civilian identity (or are Steph and therefore shun the usual Bat rules).

The only one who might call the ghastly Huntress one night stand a part of his "social life" would be the person who wrote it. What a surprise. Tim's list of the women in Dick Grayson's life in NW #25 also included both Huntress and Clancy. At this point, isn't this gently mocking the Urban Legend Love Life pattern associated to both Dick (in meta, at least) and Bruce's billionaire playboy persona with nonexistent girlfriends?
