Jericho Drum, you have been selected to join the Blue Lantern...
Ok, no, that's not what happened, but we do learn how the title of Sorcerer Supreme was passed on to Brother Voodoo.

SPOILERS BEHIND THE CUT

One image from the preview

Wow, really good job of condensing a rich history into a collage image.

Now, for all of you who have heard or seen the new Transformers 2 trailers, I can't help but think of the voice of Optimus Prime:

Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing

Um, Lettering Fail?

I hope this is more legible in print. It harms the eyes, even with such a gentle color.

The funky typeface doesn't help, either.

Wait, I'm confused. Did Strange give up the title willingly, or was it stripped from him? 'Cause I swear I've seen both.

It happened during World War Hulk.

He was desperate enough to take within him the essence of Zom, someone with the potential to be more powerful than Dormammu and Umar. It takes beings like Eternity and the Living Tribunal himself to subdue and dissipate much of the demon's power and banish him.

Already faltering, Dr. Strange corrupted himself further. While the Hulk beat the weakened Zom out of his system, we do not know how much of Dr. Strange's might was taken by the demon when he fled the host body. To give you an idea, it's like adding a drop of dark ink to clear water. Sure, you may be able to filter it out, but unless you take drastic measures, the ink will still leave traces behind. And Dr. Strange hasn't taken drastic measures yet, since Zom feeds on magic.

There have been Sorcerer/Sorceress Supremes before Dr. Strange, there will be after. I think this may be a great point for Dr. Strange to pass on his legacy, as it was passed on to him.

It's also nice that for once we can have a torch-passing that dosen't involve dismemberment and death of the previous torch-holder. It looks like he'll still be around as a character in his own right, if in a changed capacity.

Has it actually been mentioned anywhere that Drumm is the new SS? If not, you might want to put that little spoiler under the cut.

It's in the previous issue. It shows Brother Voodoo showing up with the Cloak, the Eye and other pieces of Dr. Strange's wardrobe altered to fit his voodoo mystic roots.

Marvel also announced yesterday they'd be releasing "Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of Magic".

I think that's kind of a horrible title.

Further proof that Marvel doesn't give two shits about Stephen these days. Way to send him out, guys. >:(

I sometimes wonder if there's a big wheel in Marvel HQ where a bunch of minor characters are listed, and every so often they spin the wheel to decide which minor character gets to be pimped for the next few years. Now it's Brother Voodoo's turn.

I can't wait until Quesada declares the older fans must be sated, and Dr. Strange trades Wong to Mephisto to get the Amulet back.

For those of us who love continuity, should it have been the Aged Genghis who contacts Jericho Drum? Not the Ancient One?

Actually, the Ancient One has occasionally manifested and communicated to living folks (mostly Strange) since his death. The circumstances of that were... unique in human history... and left him conscious, capable of action, and actually one with all of reality. So, in a better position to judge than a senile former holder of the office who spends his days levitating and drooling.

Back in 1974 the Ancient One said that he was bequeathing his mystical powers to Strange (hence the latter being SO MUCH more powerful than other mystics and able to fight Dormammu, Mephisto, etc. on an even playing field). It now looks as if maybe he was actively bolstering Strange from within all along, withdrew that help when Strange lost his confidence and decided to abdicate, and is now supercharging Jericho Drumm instead. Which means we're not quite so screwed as if Strange disappeared and left someone whose most impressive magic was card tricks to defend the planet untutored.
