Oh my God, it's Gwen Stacy!

The shocking news in Captain America #600 (or perhaps not); also, three and a half scans from Dark Reign: Young Avengers #2 and three from Mighty Avengers #26.  Lots of YA character appearances this week.

As far as anniversaries go, #600 is typical Brubaker quality, though it's not really shocking; why anyone thought this absolutely had to come out two days early, I'm not sure.

Anyway, the whole thing is broken into various vignettes with different characters; I earlier posted an image from the bit with Eli and Rikki, here's the end:

Elsewhere, we check in with the Red Skull, trapped in his computer-body and reminiscing about the good old days of World War II when he and Steve were constantly trying to kill each other:

At the end of the main story, the New Avengers, Black Widow and Falcon turn up incognito at the big memorial rally in Central Park which people believe that Osborn opposes.  However, Osborn smoothly coopts the event by giving Steve a rousing tribute and saying he wears the colours in his memory.  At the end...

Lose the headband, Sharon.

Over in DR: Young Avengers, the real YA ask whether Osborn put the new guys up to this.  Coat of Arms says sort of:

She introduces herself; he's heard of her art, and asks if she does the superhero bit herself.  She says no.  He gives her his business card.

Two issues in and I really love this character.

Over in Mighty Avengers, the adolescent pissing-contest between Reed and Hank escalates into an assault on the Baxter Building.  Reed heads to where the device is, which Hank crows is exactly what he planned.  However, he finds himself in a simple room with Reed seated at a desk with the device on it.  Hank lunges...

The rest of the team is running interference with the rest of the Fantastic Four, except for Cassie, who decides this is all BS and goes to tell Sue what's going on.

So it's a religious experience, then, Jo?

Whatever else you might think about Millar's FF (and I've generally enjoyed it), genius Val was an awesome idea.

Herc finds Cho's experience amusing enough to sing a song about it.

I know your history kinda sets you up for it, but please stop being creepy as fuck, Jocasta. I totally made the same face Jarvis did at the last panel.

Dude, when you're called "Jocasta", creepy incestuous stuff kind of comes with the name.

Now that is a funky room, Reed.

I do like how Hank managed to figure out that the sound was affected and used one of his own doo-hickeys to trump Reeds.

That made me think of the way the Atom penetrated Darkseid's force-field in "The Rock of Ages".

I thought the room was a neat little sci-fi idea.

If NYC doesn't, I can think of plenty of others that would.

Also, a simple way to get to Read is to make the back of the room his target.

I bet they exist in the MU, far too many bots and cyborgs running around for there not to be.

I think there actually was something like this in Iron Man: Hypervelocity, though not neccessarily in NYC.

A-- give her time.

B-- she'll then fall under Cassie's spell. At this rate, science itself will manifest in a corporeal form and declare its eternal love for our young Ms. Lang.

I haven't really followed FF4 in years so I am somewhat lost, and I don't get genius Val at all. Isn't she the younger sister? If so, why does she look older? And does Franklin (assuming the boy is Franklin) still have more mutant power than anyone, ala the Onslaught world he created back whenever it was (which was when I last really followed FF4).

Yes Val is the younger sister of Franklin born during the Waid/Wieringo run of teh early 2000's. In the recent Millar run, it turns out that the seemingly normal toddler Val had secretly inherited Reed's genius intellect, but she had been hiding it from the family. Why she looks about 5 or 6 as oppossed to 2 well artists have always failed at drawing kids and drawing a 2 year old doing geniusy stuff does seem a bit challenging.

And Franklin hasn't had his powers since about 2001. He burned them out against this cosmic vilian called Abraxus.

Franklin should be about sixteen (if we go by his appearances with Power Pack... who're already young adults) and Val should be four or five. Except nobody at Marvel cares about their real age. Blah.

Thanks for the update, I actually understand now =)

The "burned out" sounds like a cop out to me. "We gave this kid way too much power. Time to scrap it." Has there been any indication that he too may be "hiding" it?

As a matter of fact, there have been indications that he was secretly behind the Marvel Universe holding at the sacred Status Quo for so very, very, very long.

I like the YA's "Okay, whatever" to Coat-of-Arms little rambling rant.

And Henry Pym has a sonic screwdriver now? I suppose with his powers, he really DOES have pockets which are bigger on the inside.

Ya know, I've not read the series, but Reed seems like he's being a needless dick to Hank. Especially when you consider that Hank is actually doing something to counter Norman's little take over while Reed's just sitting in his castle, looking down on everyone.

That Millar protection won't last forever, Reed!

Fey, Xeno was an idiot. The paradox of the runner and the tortoise only works as a paradox if both contestants are moving at exactly the same speed, and the paradox Reed is citing presumes that eventually the runner would have to cross half of Nothing, a value which is inherently indivisible.

Thank Grodd for Paul Cornell, one of the few current Marvel writers who isn't mediocre at his best and utterley useless at his worst. It's rare to see a character so malevolent and yet so touchingly endearing. But then again, we all fell in love with the neck-snapping Warren Ellis-sharpened Norman, back before he became Dick-Cheney-On-Drugs-In-A-Tin-Can.

However, Osborn smoothly coopts the event by giving Steve a rousing tribute and saying he wears the colours in his memory.

Bleah. I know it's *supposed* to be a provocation to the reader, but even as that it annoys me. The MU is so messed up that I don't have any fun hating on Osborne, because the writers seem too enchanted with him.

The Cap stuff... sigh. I just hope Brubaker doesn't fuck it up. I want Steve back, but in a good way, not a clusterfuck.

"The Green Goblin told me to do it." is an inherently better motivation than "God told me to do it."

Also, the scenes from #600 exemplify perfectly why I like the book is just fine without Steve. It's about a bunch of very diverse people who all had their lives touched by a living legend and are bound together by their shared memories and reverence of him. I'd much rather have it remain that way for a little while longer.
