Standing Room Only

This comes from Crime SuspenStories #23.

For the record, like my Warren posts, I'm pretty much done posting EC stories mainly because most of them wouldn't be as effective under the new 1/3-per-story rule. That being said, I'm making a brief exception to this with the following story mainly because of how cracky it is.

So basically, the story revolves around two twins Cynthia and Carl who, despite being of different genders, look similar enough that it's easy to fool people into thinking that they are the other twin when wearing each other's clothes (as the preview pic shows).

The two part when Carl refuses to work as a clerk to support Cynthia and his mother. Carl wants to live his own life but eventually becomes a bum. One day, he discovers that his sister has married a millionaire. When he visits Cynthia for help, she refuses on account of how he deserted her when she needed him the most. She gives him a hundred dollars out of pity and sends him on his way, which infuriates Carl. He comes up with a plan to switch places with her once he realizes that her husband has left his entire estate to her in his will...

I wonder how true that catching thing was even when women usually wore dresses? (I only wear dresses when I absolutely must and so never tried catching things in a skirt.)

I don't know, but it's a thing that tends to stick in the mind, so even if it wasn't really that common, Berry would latch on to that when the other subtle impressions added up with that final oops.

O-ho-ho! If Frederic Wertham had known about this story, he wouldn't have had to spend time looking for hidden genitalia in the folds of superhero costumes to show that comic books were corrupting the nation's youth. I mean, here you have a guy crossdressing, stripping his sister naked before killing her, then "growing gay" while encouraging the handsome lawyer to get drunk, and finally "mistakenly" slipping into the men's room...

...Mercy sakes alive! I must bring this to the attention of my pastor, senator, and the local PTA.

I'm curious, how does this end?

This is the end. Look at the bottom corner of the last page.

Note the tiny "The End" in the lower right corner.

This type of comic tends to end in much the same way as a distracted runner ends their running when they slam into a brick wall.

Neal Stephenson is one of my favorite authors, but he tends to end his novels in similar fashion.

I just started listening to an audiobook of QUICKSILVER. So far it sounds a hell of a lot like a NAME OF THE ROSE-ish thing(which isn't a bad thing). Should I expect more of the same?

A brick wall made of stalwart, INESCAPABLE JUSTICE.

Oh, so awesome. But I've always been in that minority that found a lot more perversity in Kamen's seemingly tame art than any number of Ingels pages.
