Greg Land at his most tolerable

Four scans from Uncanny X-Men #511; Land's first issue was okay by his standards, the next was really awful, this one is back to being mostly okay (again, by his standards).

The X-Men vs. Sisterhood brawl continues.  Land's art is terribly undynamic, but there's a rather enjoyable sequence here that has an enjoyably comic feel (feels a bit like a quick-cut TV sequence):

Elsewhere, the various X-Men deal with evil-spirit-of-Psylocke-in-Kwannon's-body, and they succeed in reviving the real Psylocke's mind to compete with the "murder spirit" within her mind:

And the end...

And, in a nice surprise, Terry Dodson drops in for the last two pages, to provide some genuinely good art.

This. By the time they bring the poor bitch back, I doubt anyone's going to much care. I'd be surprised if many people cared now.

Right! I mean jeepers this issue was weak. They didn't even bring Psylock back properly or with any thrill. This run on Uncanny continues to be flat soda. It has all the promise of being a delicious fizzy beverage and then it just turns out to be watery syrup. Maybe X-club's journey will be a bit more thrilling but i doubt it.

I suspect that she will return from the dead, everyone will blast her immediately claiming that she's a fake.

And the readers will cheer!

Umm. She is back. She's collecting the shards of the pheonix. She's got this higher being guardian angel thing going on which I hope sticks even if she does reapear more dramaticly. She shows up. Is awsome. Then leaves because she's above all this.

No, not for a while.

What happened to the old team hasn't been explained, but I imagine Parker will get around to that (it's a mystery).

The Thief: Greg Land tag cracks me right up.

However.

Spiral, honey... your arms... they do not work. As drawn, they are made of FAIL. They are really obviously not arranged on your body the same way in both those panels. The first makes it look like she has a double-ended arm glued to her shoulder in the middle. AUUUUGH *flail* Where's Foxhack?!

...Oh, you posted when I wasn't looking.

Kay, that's all I needed.

Oh, Fraction you diabolical TEASE.

I AM FREAKING SICK TO DEATH OF PSYLOCKE-TRAPPED-IN-A-JAPANESE-WOMAN'S-BODY!

I wish Cornell could have been given the chance to bring back British Betsy in MI:13, even if only for a little while. It never really feels right, having her trapped inside Kwannon. Just very, very creepy.

Additionally, I'm under the impression that Fraction may not be all that good a writer after all. Between this UXM run - which would be boring and uninspired even without Land, and looks to be getting worse with these upcoming "Dark X-Men" - combined with his unengaging Iron Man and "Celebrity Big Brother With Superpowers", he hasn't impressed me much at all. If not for Iron Fist, he'd probably be one of the worst writers I can think of working at Marvel.

Hmmm, I kind of like Fraction as a writer... Except that they seem to pair him with the most god-awful artists imaginable. The writing is at least acceptable, the art is eye-gougingly bad.

Different strokes. Fraction got me to quit reading Uncanny. I can tolerate Land when balanced by a decent writer, but Fraction and Land together was a match made in hell for me. I'm not sure whether the dialogue during the scene was meant to be deliberately ironically awful or just awful, though. By this point I'm not sure I care. The sex obsession, horrible, clumsy dialogue and the general lack of understanding of 90% of the characters he's writing already put me off.

Mainly because it's how people would actually talk in a fight.

There's really very little room for one-liners when in a fight to the death.

She's wearing the ninja outfit, but she doesn't look very Asian.

And thus, I am confused. So what happened to British-Betsy's body?

Psylocke wins the mental war with the Evil-Psylocke thing, which causes the Kwannon body to shut down; Psylocke's back in her Asian body.

As for why it doesn't look especially Asian, well...that's Land for you. He uses the same character faces for everyone.

Fraction doesn't seem to have a grasp on what Spiral's abilities are. She's been underused in this arc. This is the same Spiral who singlehandedly almost defeated the X-Men by herself? Northstar is fast and all, but Fraction seems to be ignoring Spiral's mystical and teleporting abilities almost entirely.

This entire fight was pretty uninspired so far as powers-use goes. Of course, Land's visual storytelling is damn near incomprehensible beyond "Er...they're hitting each other. Or possibly having sex", so for all I know, the fight was brilliantly paced in the script and this is the best translation that Land could deliver.

Yeah, I can't really blame Fraction for the incomprehensible fight scenes here. When you're stuck with Land you either can have your issues be porno faces talking constantly to avoid the rubber armed fight scenes or vice versa.

One thing I really DO like about Uncanny X-Men is that it's not really a team book. It's just about mutants surviving and doing what's right for mutants. And of course, whatever shit people who hate the x-men get them caught up in.

As a result you don't end up with really arbitrary and boring "teams" that can't ever be adjusted. You have as many mutants as you need being used constantly and being put into combat when it best suits them. Basically I really like the San Fran x-men a lot.

Please avoid making personal attacks. There's a line between being critical of, or even attacking a creator's work and attacking them personally. The "fuck you" is unnecessary and goes beyond criticism to break one of the community's most important guidelines.

Try and tone it down in future, please.

Oh thanks a lot for sharing this nice stuff! All the characters are great, but I have to make a confession, that I've never met such cute girls among comics characters like these two! They are really cute and magic! Fantastic bodies and faces, I don't even mention the costumes. I really wish to see some lesbians series with these girls and their favorite sex toy
