Another Perfect Moment: The Green Goblin

This comes from Thunderbolts #121. I wasn't planning on posting it originally, but someone brought it up in my previous Goblin thread, so I figured it'd be worth sharing.

Surely someone, or possibly many someones, have made an icon out of the "naked dictation" box.

this is the most glorious goblin monologue I have ever read

I'd vowed that if someone didn't post some Ellis!Goblin for this theme soon I would (I just couldn't decide between this or "A pig coughed and you fell out!")

I love how self-aware yet completely batshit Norman is in this scene. I also love the way he describes his costume: "Down here. Safe. Sleeping. Waiting."

Maybe it's because I just read another couple volumes of Transmetropolitan recently but I'm really getting a Spider Jerusalem vibe off some of this.

Especially the naked dictation line.

Ellis does seem to like to have at least one character who talks just like Spider a lot of the time, yeah.

A note on Deodato's layout brilliance.

I think that you and I miiiight have had this conversation on the old S_D, but one of the most underrated things about Ellis and Deodato's work on TBolts was Deodato's layouts. Look at this last scan - the chaotic jumble of panels while Normie loses it, then he settles into the Green Goblin persona, and the panels on the right side are back to smooth and orderly.

Deodato did stuff like this all the time in his work on TBolts. I really, really enjoyed it. Yeah, Deodato has abundant weaknesses - inability to draw a woman without Perma Hip Sway™ action, a gross inability to understand how the female body works, etc. But the physical composition of his layouts on TBolts? Where he added so much with subtext? Shows why comics can do things that no other medium can.

Mike Deodato? The guy who did all those 90s-riffic* WW issues?

The very same.

"Make the girl pregnant and then snap her neck?"

Wait, the Goblin babies are STILL IN CONTINUITY? *facepalm*

(Also, methinks Norman is remembering it wrong.)

Well he thinks it's in continuity. And who are we to argue, he's only violently insane. ;)

JMS was hoping that to be the silver lining of OMD, sweeping away that nonsense, but Joe Q demanded it stay canon.

The costume does look great like this, I agree. They had a Goblin redesign for Norman around the time Millar did his run on Spider-Man, and it was utterly ugly and too heavily armoured, a world away from the original green and purple togs, but this strikes a really good balance.

This is a pretty cool moment, all right - but it's an awful shame that the art crapped out on one significant detail. Did they not think that, after having Norman rhapsodize about how the costume still smells of the day Gwen Stacy was murdered, he should then be WEARING the costume he was wearing on the day Gwen Stacy was murdered? This is NOT that costume - that costume was the classic costume, whereas this has all sorts of details that the classic version didn't have, from leather shoulder-and-kneepads to the Colossus-like metallic texturing in place of the classic green chainmail and the trailing 'earpieces' on the hat. (The classic costume didn't have orange eyes, either, but I'll give him a pass on that - everyone seems to draw the eyes differently.) This isn't a bad GG costume, but it's NOT THE ONE NORMAN MURDERED GWEN IN! Artist, show a little restraint - there are times when your costume design is appropriate, and times when it isn't.
Still, the rest is pretty cool. Norman is damn good at being self-righteous, I'll give him that.

To be fair, he only said "blondes." He could very well be refering to another blonde he killed. Or he's just consistantly giving "fuck yous" to Parker even if they don't entirely made sense.

"See this costume, Parker? It's the one I killed your girlfriend in!"
"Uh...actually, no it isn't. That one looks more armory then your old one--"
"I'm sorry, I didn't hear that--I was too busy remembering the sound of her spine snapping like a twig!"

True enough, but it's clearly implied that he's referring to Gwen - the immediate association in most people's minds is automatically going to be Gwen, if they know their Spider/Goblin history at all, given that she's the most prominent blonde in both their lives, and her killing immediately preceded Norman's death, so he's likely to have strong memories of her. And Peter isn't involved in this situation, so it being a nonsensical taunt aimed in his direction doesn't make sense.

eh, he's a psychopath who dresses like a goblin and fights a man with the proportional powers of a spider

dunno if there is really much sense in Marvel in general

plus, he could have upgraded the old suit, who knows

Oh, he's upgraded the suit multiple times - but not THIS suit. He says as much himself - otherwise, it wouldn't smell the same, would it? Except that this is clearly NOT that suit, so either Norman is just free-associating or the artist got overly ambitious, and I'm tending to go for option number two.
And yes, he's a psycho, all right, but he's not a gibbering lunatic - his ravings generally make SENSE, they just aren't TRUE, in terms of, y'know, him being destined to rule and so forth. And in this case, I think he's almost at his sanest, because this suit MEANS something to him. While wearing it, he had (as he sees it) one of the great triumphs of his career, followed by one of the worst defeats. It'd be like setting aside the clothes you graduated in, then bringing them out years later and smelling your sweat and the mingled smells of the crowd - you wouldn't be going 'Hey, woo! This smells fuuuuuun-KEY!', you'd be going 'damn, this brings back memories.' (At least, I would.)
