Remember the old "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" ?

Came across a few issues . Some of the Character profile art was excellent ...some was NOT.

I have always loved this outfit for Rogue,she used to be a small petite girl, then at some point in the 90's she was drawn like she was really tall. I need to get a latex version of this to wear at clubs :)

Nice Scarlet witch. Read the expalanation of how her powers work LOL.

This would be the BAD. She-Hulk legwarmers ??? Ho' Kay...

	I remember loving that Rogue image, the costume was fabulous, the assymetric look seemed so right for someone who was so... off kilter because of her powers. The OHOTMU did indeed have some wonderful art, and the pseudoscience fumfurr for the powers was a joy, Mark Gruenwald getting to play with ALL the Marvel toys and having a ball every step of the way. 	The problem with Rogue at that time was that the shortness of her hair plus the white streak led somre artists to depict her as a middle-age woman, which was contradicted by thee writing. Same problem for some artists with a bearded Ollie or a white-haired Pietro. That pic of Wanda is awesome! Always loved it and forgot where it was from. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	The white streak wasn't half the problem as when it was in it's original appearance of a stripes at both her temples sweeping back into her hair, now that really DID make her look middle aged. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	The next issue of "wolverine first class" has Dazzler in it with the original outfit. The book has been retro fitted into the "Marvel time" formate of everything is 10 years old. I wonder how they will fit her look into that music scene ??? (Reply to this) (Parent)

	Somehow 5'8" is not what I would classify as "petite", but then again I'm only around 5'. And She-Hulk actually looks like she could bench press 50 tons there, though the shallow side of me admittedly thinks that she looks better now. :P (Reply to this) (Thread)

	The Rogue image is nice. I looks like Byrne, from the face (back when he could still draw. A lot of characters had the same face but it was a good face). My uncles had this book. However, they outlined the boobs with red marker. (Reply to this) (Thread)

Regrettably, that's exactly what Shulkie was going around fighting crime in at the time. Janet Van Dyne tried to make her a set of fancy-pants street clothes (and made her take them off before leaping into battle, no less) but that...wasn't all that much better.

I know Rogue is Paul Smith; he was drawing the X-books at the time IIRC. Do we know who did the Witch and She-Hulk pinups? Al Milgrom for the S-H maybe? Seems to me he was drawing her in Avengers around then. (I believe Joe Rubenstein did the inks on everything in the Handbook.)

Smith, Herb Trimpe, Alan Weiss, Michael Zeck.

Of those, I'm guessing maybe Sandy Plunkett?

	I just love that expression on Rogue's face. Wanda is OK, too, although she really shouldn't have a six-pack. She-Hulk... meh. I forget who this artist is (I think they were the regular Avengers artist at the time), but they're all kind of meh. The pin-up that Byrne had on the cover of his She-Hulk GN would have been a much better choice. (Reply to this) (Thread)

I agree - there's an issue of Avengers where we see her sneaking off to the pantry to eat some ice cream when she's feeling a bit blue after an inter-team squabble. I see her as someone who makes an effort to keep in reasonable shape, but since there isn't really a physical aspect to her powers, there's no particular reason for her to spend hours in the gym or anything. Her role in the team is to stand back and go 'hocus-pocus - death ray, turn at a right angle and blacken the neighbor's azaleas!' - she doesn't hit anybody or anything.

	Sure I would - but I don't think her powers really work like that. She doesn't have Dr. Strange-esque 'do anything with a mystic flourish' powers, she has 'make random stuff happen to our advantage' powers. She's not a miracle-worker. (Reply to this) (Parent)

	It was driving me mad, so I went out and found this issue through one of those sources that dare not speak its name. According to the inside front cover index, Rogue art is by Paul Smith, Scarlet Witch art is by Sandy Plunkett, and She-Hulk art is by Allen Milgrom. Josef Rubenstein is listed as inker/embellisher for the whole issue. (Reply to this)

	I always love how much Deep Thought the Marvel-folks put in to their characters' powers, trying to make it sound all scientific and shit. SERIOUS BUSINESS indeed. Still, it's one of those things I really like about some comic books--trying to make something patently ridiculous sound really awesome and totally serious. (Reply to this) (Thread)

	The best things were Eliot R. Brown's technical diagrams--an imaginative kid could believe that it would take just one serious run to Edmund Scientific to put an Iron Man suit together. Some of those diagrams and technobabble explanations were Starfleet Technical Manual quality, if not better. (Reply to this) (Parent)
