This from my 3rd fav. What If ? story....
Photobucket

I have decide to take part in Doom week.

In the end it all comes down to that fatefull first meeting of Victor VonDoom and Reed Richards. How fine it is the thread on whihc the world may turn...

Photobucket

They fix the mistakes and Victor takes off in search of his mother.
Photobucket

Doom frees his mother and thus the worlds biggest chip is taken off his shoulder. Doom becomes a HERO !

Photobucket

But... some parties are NOT amused by Doom's actions. This pages works well for Doomweek and Porn week.

Photobucket

Doom gets married to his true love.

Photobucket

But like all the really good What If's they end in greek tragedy. You don't cross the devil and get away with it...

Photobucket

So Doom gets made an offer. You can keep one,but NOT both BWAA-HA HAh !

Photobucket

The artist for this book is Fred Kida, I think it works SO well . I have look but can't fin anything else he did. Too Bad...

I was gonna ask who did the art. I dimly remember this story, and it was indeed very cool.

The Old What IF? book had many one hit wonders that did something great and then nothing(or became editors).

So looking at this story and also Unthinkable, I've learned that Doom will sacrifice Valeria at the drop of a hat. Poor thing.

Then again, the entire thing could easily be a front, and the story will eventually end with Doom uniting all of Earth's heroes to battle and defeat Mephisto forevermore...

What issue number is this? I so have to look for this. My fav What If story is the one with Capt America being thawed out in modern times (by Doom) instead of in the 60s with Doom and the Skull controlling each halves of the world.

Second fav would be What If Doom Became Sorcerer Supreme? God that was a fun story too. Someone should post that too for Doom Week.

that seems less like a choice and more like

" Okay, so you can pick outcome A, which is awesome, outcome B, which is also awesome, or outcome C, which is a BAD END and total shit- "

" Outcome C? Are you kidding me? "

" OUTCOME C IT IS "

But that was the way the old What IF ? always worked no matter how hard it pulled at your haeart strings the happy ending just couldn't work. It always was worst than what was before. High drama...

I love AUs where villains become heroes. See also: Alex Luthor, Jokester, Quizmaster.

And this is one of the better ones, because it's completely in keeping with character. The one thing that is different is that, for ONE MOMENT, Victor can get over himself and suck up his pride. (Actually, this Victor's a little smarter than the one we know because of that) Other than that, everything is as it might have been, character is maintained, and it doesn't run to an "everybody dies!" ending.

And even more, it's supplemental to the actual MU, as it really points up the tragic aspect of Doom in a way that would be more difficult in the 616 version. (and it's interesting as it shows this character could have held a book of his own, kind of HELLBLAZER crossed with DR. STRANGE with more goth)

Fred Kida was a golden age artist, probably best known for his work on the old AIRBOY series. I don't think he ever did much superhero work, but he drew a lot of war, western, and horror stories from the 40s-70s.

This is a very good illustration of Doom's main, overwhelming flaw - his ego. Even if he DID become a hero, he could never become the sort of ultimate hero that would give his life for the cause, because in his mind, that would be doing the world a greater disservice than any villainy could ever do. 'Cause he's DOOM, dammit, and therefore must be the BEST HERO EVER! It's interesting in that he's not so much concerned for his life or his soul here, as he is for the world itself - by his way of thinking, leaving it without a Doom is many magnitudes worse than leaving it with a Valeria, no matter how much he loves her. To his mind, this isn't selfishness, it's altruism. It would never cross his mind that the world managed to get along perfectly well without him for so many years - he's here now, and he can't do such a terrible thing as to deprive it of his magnificent self at this point. 'Twould not be Doomly!
To his credit, though, he DOES then spend years trying to get her back - and who knows, he might succeed. He IS Doom, after all. Go get 'em, Doomy! We're all cheerin' for ya!

Good story, but they really should have gone with silver/stainless steel for his armor, rather than gold.

I think if it were silver it would be a little too similar to his "regular" outfit--having it be gold when he's a hero helps create the necessary contrast, I think.

And looks more pimp.

I agree, the golden Armour distances this from the 616 character. Warm him up so to speak. :)
