Byrne's run on . . . Action Comics, I think? Nearish the end of his run, he had Superman travel to a pocket universe created by the Time Trapper so the Legion of Superheroes could still have been inspired by Superboy, because the real Superman never was a Superboy . . .

Anyway . . . this Superboy still had the Silver Age level stength, speed, etc., and so was quite capable of wiping his ass with the real Superman without much effort. In the end, Pocket Universe General Zod killed everyone in the pocket universe and Superman then executed Zod and his lackeys (always two there are) for his crimes in an example of 80s-era grittiness and the biggest difference between Silver/Bronze Supes and the post COIE Supes.

Which eventually led to Gangbuster and Superman have psychotic episodes, that sent him into self-imposed exile . . . which never had any effect on anything ever again, and we should just stop talking about it.

Nono I know all about the Pocket Universe stuff but where was this Krypto story from?

This is from Action Comics #591.

Ah, thanks!

Should've figured, it's one of the two Pocket Universe issues I don't have, it and Legion of Superheroes #38.

It was such a sad story too. At least the Pocketverse Superboy popped up a bit after that like in Hypertension and Zero Hour.

Presumably from Kyrpton, just like the silver age. The whole Uni was created by the Time trapper (whoever he was at that point) It is never truly stated, but since Gold K took it's super toll that's my guess.

What would be twisted is if he were Prime, given the Pocket Universe was created by the Time Trapper(which is NOT available from Mead, but all this sounds like it should be, doesn't it?) who in turn is Prime. Oh, the paradoxes and loops!

So Krypto did all that for nothing at the end, nice effort but bad results for the poor dog.

You can only hope so. :)

Who's a dumb dog? Who? Who?

And another thing: just why were Ma and Pa keeping every kind of Kryptonite? Well, if you can't ground a kid, I guess you gotta have SOMEthing...

No, Superboy kept those around. In his underground lab, see? Just like every other earnest young boy inventor/scientist in those days, experimenting with stuff that could kill him.

Hmm. He was a teenager. Sometimes they get depressed...

Superboy had his "fortress of solitude" Under the Kent house at the time.

I say that he liked to expose himself a bit. Like any teenager, he'd be curious and engage in risky behavior. Especially given how few friends he had in his century.

In the case of green that'd be kind of like cutting.

In the case of red K, of course he's getting high. No matter what the effect of red K I think we can assume it's not a normal feeling.

And again re: Krypto: "super-intelligence?" Only enough to be darkly amusing, apparently...But that's like any dog too.

Smallville (TV series) Clark actually DOES treat his Red K in that way, making for some of the best episodes of that series.(Of course, "best' is relative.)

Well, it is an interesting point. One would then assume Krypto was just an ordinary dog on krypton . It wasn't until he hit the yellow sun of earth that all his abilities, including super intelligence kicked in.

Something about this story never quite added up. Krypto scans Superman and identifies him as a Kryptonian. But then the Kryptonite doesn't work on him because Post-Crisis Kryptonians are a totally different species from Pocket Universe Kryptonians. So why didn't Krypto see the difference right off?

I would say it was kinda like how Krypto didn't expect the cape to tear. The original outfit was made out of the three blankets from Kal-el's rocket. Of which I recall, the yellow must have had alot of material left over, wonder what became of that ???

Well, that was... sad. And unnecessary - Krypto could've just SHOWN him the container of Gold K, and it would've had the same effect. For cryin' out loud, Byrne, you were about to off the whole universe anyway - would it have killed you to have given poor little Krypto a noble death in battle or something, instead of being mindwiped?

Eh, he probably lived a nice long life being petted and fed bacon treats by the Kents, and went to that great Dog Park in the Sky before Zod and his cohorts showed up and deep-sixed the whole planet.

No, he didn't - if this is part of that same storyline, then I'm presuming Zod's (and the planet's) demise happened within the next issue or so. If he's going to be turned into a charcoal briquette anyway, he should at least get a chance to go down fighting as the Krypto we all know and love. Look at his takedown of the Kryptonite Man in 'Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' - THAT was a good 'heroic sacrifice' moment.

The part of the Zod storyline we saw (quite a few issues after this) was set in the present, with adult versions of Lex Luthor, Oliver Queen, Hal Jordan, etc. It was supposed to be at least a decade after the meeting Superboy story. I'm not sure exactly when between the two stories Zod, Zaora, and Quex-Ul did their big planet devastating move though.
