I don't know if I'd call that something specific to BND; JJJ's character has always been very dependent on individual creators' takes. He swings between being an asshole who nevertheless is a committed and serious journalist to just being an asshole for its own sake. It's a consequence, I suppose, of his primary character schtick being an irrational dislike of Spider-Man.
One of my favourite moments with the 'good' JJJ was in the 90s animated show, when it was revealed that he was the secret financier of Peter Parker's defence attorney (when the Kingpin framed him for treason).
