Models, Inc. #1

So Models, Inc was a miniseries originally solicited for February and has finally been rescheduled for August. Only the solicit is out at this time, no cover yet.

MODELS, INC. #1 (of 4)
Written by PAUL TOBIN
Penciled by VICENC VILLAGRASA
Cover by SCOTT CLARK
Variant Cover by PHIL JIMENEZ
Fashion Week is always a hectic time for models, and this year is no exception. Between escaped wolves, robbery attempts, and overly friendly police officers, Toni Turner, Patsy Walker, Jill Jerold, Chili Storm and Millicent (Millie the Model) Collins are testing the limits of their endurance. But when a brilliant young set designer is found murdered with three bullet holes in his back, and Millie proves to be the prime suspect, the models are forced to play detective in order to save one of their own!
* Retailers please note that this issue will contain an ad for Marvel Subscriptions.
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$3.99

I didn't think it was worth posting at first. And then I noticed something had changed.

Here is the original solicit, see if you can spot the difference.

Who the heck is Toni Turner and why did she replace MJ?

And for legality this is the original cover for Models, Inc #1.

Hmm...taking out Mary Jane. That's kinda stupid. I though originally it might be to make sure to have MJ appear in Spidey first but she's appearing that month anyway in ASSM.

Kind of wonder if they are planning on disappearing her further (not that she hasn't basically disappeared from ASM.) Like, dead disappeared.

I'm kind of curious, too. It seems weird that they would pull the highest profile character off.

Ugh, and that cover just had to remind me of Jackpot.

And here's the cover from 2 which had MJ on it.

It's not?

But the soulless eyes, the scary smile. It sure looks like it is.

Sorry I'll go edit the post now.

The solicit says some guy called "Scott Clark" made that. Yes, it feels like Land but it isn't him.

Clark is probably going to be Land's minion. Instead of Land actually tracing stuff he'll have someone else do the tracing for him.

I actually have very few problems with this Clark fellow because of these reasons:

A) He actually used a proper photo to trace from instead of a hodgepodge of different bodies and faces;
B) The girl looks pretty, not too plastic or anything like that;
C) The pose looks natural, not forced;
D) Even though it's traced, there's actual SHADING and COLORING
E) It looks just as photoshopped as pictures in a real fashion magazine!

I think they've also used that style for at least some of the Pride and Prejudice comic covers. Can't think of any other examples off the top of my head.

I never know where I fit in all this. Do I creepily stalk and seduce you guys, or run around looking for men to castrate, or sit around with said men grunting and talking about motorcycles and car engines, or what?

Honestly I was wondering that as I wrote the boyfriends bit.

I think maybe you sit on tables with a knowing look in your eye, roll your eyes at our troubles, and offer us cigarettes with a sardonic smile?

I can't think where I've seen that sort of trope, but I'm pretty sure that I have.

(And if you swap out the cigarettes for candy sticks, that's the kind of person I'd like to have around.)

Marvel has a really weirdly creepy schizophrenic mentality about MJ.

On the one hand, everyone in Marvel editorial who seems to be in charge practically foams at the mouth when they mention her, because how dare that dirty whore Steal Peter's love away from his sainted Gwen (which only makes Quesada's insistence that Gwen/Norman in "Sins Past" is still canon seem all the more bizarre, since he seems to hate MJ as much as anybody), and yet, they've gone out of their way to turn MJ into Spider-Man's Lois Lane, to the point that NON-comics fans are actually the MOST likely to see her as Peter's Only Love. It's like, they WISH they could disappear her forever, but they CAN'T, and it's giving them ... well, MJ Derangement Syndrome. :)

given that victor von doom's been showing up in a lot of evil plots to date (mentions of a Von Doom device in the Red Skull's... thing, plus what he's got going with Loki and Dracula), I half expect him to be involved in this too.

Honestly, I think there's a non-sinister answer to this. The Marvel solicits for Spider-man this month have MJ making her return to ASM. The odds are, Marvel didn't want her appearing in two books because they wanted the Spider-man writers to have control over her editorial direction. Whatever that is. *shudder*

Models and Divas... ookay Marvel. The models thing could make a funny spoof under the right writer, but that's obviously not where they're going...
