Batman/Green Lantern SHOWDOWN!
Long ago (back on Apr. 17 in fact) [info]scannertastic requested scans of the epic confrontation between Batman and Green Lantern. I just realized those pages are in the JLI trade I just got a week or two ago, and it's the perfect chance to try out the scan function on my new(ish) all-in-one. Soooo, from Justice League International #5, Sept. 1987, 3 pages plus preview image.

I also speak for everybody when I say "BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Either that or Ted tossing away Guy's ring (page 2, panel 2.)

I never noticed that before, and now I'll never not notice it again.

Oh, but it's a detail essential to the plot! Y'see, if it wasn't for Ted tossing the ring, Guy would never have gone rooting around inside the kitchen cabinet, and... ummm... wackiness would not have ensued, yes, that's the way to put it!

Speaking of that, I've always wanted to see their reaction to Guy going nice all of a sudden. But that has never been posted :(

I have a special fondness for Beetle actually lifting his goggles to wipe tears away as well.

I love Captain Marvel and Booster's "Ohhhhhh no you didn't" looks. hahaha!

And, for a second I thought Batman had pegged him with one of those Joker-like fist-punchy doo-hickey guns. (Vague enough? Yes.)

From what I've heard they just leave Guy there on the ground for several issues after until he wakes up.

I just loved this as a homage in Batman Brave and the Bold.

He wakes up in #7, so call it an issue and a half.

Anyone have a scan of that "wake up"? Guy having his fragile reality shattered by a painful reminder he isn't alpha dog?

It's not really that exciting. A panel of wrath, and then he goes looking for his ring and then more head-trauma.

oh awesome, i figured this'd gotten forgotten about! cheers! i have to say though, i forgot how horrible black canary's outfit is in this. ee.

isn't there some later-on scene elsewhere where hal knocks batman out in reference to this? or something? i think i remember it from the old scans_daily...

Yes, emerald rebirth or whatever, Batman wants Hal and the GL's to stop and Hal decks him. Guy feels justified that a GL got back at Bats, but Batman was already getting back up.

Scott thinks in the third person? Using his stage name? Oh well.

Also, Batman doesn't seem to have much respect for the wisdom of Solomon.

I never really liked that panel. I never liked how you didn't see the punch connect, and that weird shadow thing its doing.

That's pricely the point. That's why Mister Miracle commented on Batman being efficient. It wasn't a wind up haymaker, nor a round house or upper cut. It's one of those "so fast no one saw the punch while my hands were on my hips and returned to my hips like a gunslinger/ Muhammad Ali phantom punch/super secret bat-jitsu technique" blows. Guy had the wind up and was already starting to swing when he got knocked-the-f-out. He didn't even see it coming.

And it sends a crystal clear message to Guy. "I can take you apart with ease anytime I want to and you couldn't do a thing to stop me."

Someone please tell me Beetle and Booster took pics of him on the floor with timestamps and other silly things you do to your drunk friends who couldn't hold their liquor.

Well, in one of the only moments in JLA #0 worth the paper it's printed on, we find out Dinah took a picture and faxed it to Diana.

I love the implicit admission that Bruce hides Ollie's arrows. And that comparison makes me think Clark must have indulged at some point too.

That is such a great moment. Months worth of lead-up to what looked like it was going to lead into a battle royale, and BONK! It's over. Also, the panel itself is a masterful use of minimalism. Guy's face, Batman's fist. Batman's fist, Guy's face. Face, meet fist. Fist, meet face. That's all you need, really.

And this is why:

(1) Giffen/deMatteis/Maguire will never be topped, and
(2) I consider THIS to be the in-character version of the DCU, so there. Nyah.
