I'm loving the Prisoner vibe I'm getting from this first issue, but I wish I had even the slightest idea of what's going on.

You should give it a browse. It's the most hilarious example of writing for trade I've ever seen. The entire thing is solid setup, 110% nothing as a prelude to potential later sensemaking. Like, if it were a TV show, it would not even have reached the first commercial break by the end of the 22 pages (as opposed to, say, an ish of SECRET SIX, which has the decency to be nearly the story equivalent of a full half-hour episode). It's like, "look, mystery and weirdness! I bet you wonder what's going on, right? Isn't it all very trippy? Something's strange here! Look how strange! Strange and trippy! And weird! And mysterious! Oh look we're out of pages! Come back next month and maybe we'll actually start dropping some clues about WTF is going on or why you should consider beginning to care!" XD

That said, the trade might actually be worth picking up. Particularly if Chase is really there and not part of whatever weird... whatever that he's ESCAPEing from. Because it actually feels like Tresser. There's all this primacy given to his identity as a Suicide Squad guy and his own corner of the DCU, the influence and importance of Waller and the low-key, gritty, street-level spyness of him. I hadn't realized until I read this ish, but Tresser running around WONDER WOMAN is like the Terminator running around the bridge of the Enterprise. He doesn't fit, it's not his genre. Get him away from the avatars and demigods and epic mythology and into something close and dark and head-gamey, and suddenly he works again, is compelling and right and totally interesting to watch.

I wonder now if part of my objection to him as Diana's love interest has been for his sake, without realizing it, and if there's anything similar going on with my hatred of the Bat/Wonder 'ship due to it pulling Bruce into the JLA world (which I've always thought was ill-fitting and detrimental for the character in much the same way) in a particularly dramatic way that just his membership and presence there doesn't. Weird thought.

LOLOLOL, okay now I really want to see that happen. Which Enterprise and crew, though, is the question. I'm re-watching some of the Trek movies lately so all I can picture is Ahnold around there.

When it comes to Batman/Wonder Woman, yeah, her not being non-powered is really the only thing I don't like about that pairing. I like the idea of it as a fun possibility for them, but it could never be something long-lived because she doesn't fit into his world, and he would burn out too quickly if he spent all his time in her world.

...and CRAP! I just realized I forgot to pick up the latest issue of Wonder Woman. Arg.

Heh. My issues with the pairing are legion, but how very much he does not fit in her world has always been one of them. I'm just used to thinking of that in terms of "Diana deserves someone who respects her life, choices and culture rather than someone who's suspicious of them on a good day and contemptuous on a bad one," while it suddenly strikes me now that I also feel strongly that Bruce also deserves someone whose world he'll be comfortable in. (::coughSelinacough::)

Funny about the "powers" thing. The big hue and cry in the fanbase is always that Wonder Woman with a mortal makes no sense, which is ridiculous; the difference between, say, Rama and Trevor Barnes proves that it's a problem for writers, but that's on the writers, it's not Diana's hang-up. Meanwhile you never hear people bag on Bruce/Zee or Bruce/Diana with the argument that Bruce with a meta makes no sense... even though Bruce's distrust of metas is part of the fundamental core of his character from hating Starfire on out.

Well, being so bat-focused my first instinct is to look at it from his point of view, and Bruce being Bruce will never be wholly comfortable being that close with someone who isn't a mortal human like he is. Especially when you factor in how much death has played a role in his life, oddly enough. Although there is the possibility that Clark or Diana could die, I think he would have a hard time reconciling himself with being partnered with someone who is immortal.

It's really messed up, but I think he would be more loving and interested in someone whose life could be cut short, because he knows how precious (and potentially brief) life can be. (Which, ironically is also what makes him drive people away, because he's scared of losing them.) If he was with someone immortal, he wouldn't have to worry about them as much, and I think a part of him would start to resent them for it. "Why do they get to cheat death but my parents couldn't?" Their lives and his life tend to be governed by different sets of rules, and blending them raises all sorts of problems.

In short: Bruce would fuck it up somehow. He's better suited to someone of approximate equal strength.

the difference between, say, Rama and Trevor Barnes proves that it's a problem for writers, but that's on the writers, it's not Diana's hang-up.

Well, that could be boiled down to most people being comfortable with a couple of equal power or the guy being stronger, but the woman being stronger is somehow strange and off-kilter.

even though Bruce's distrust of metas is part of the fundamental core of his character from hating Starfire on out.

Is *that* where it started?

OMG, want to know what's really trippy for me about that first scan where Tom is holding the arm? My dad just uncovered a bunch of DC action figures that my brother and I (apparently) had as kids. LOOK AT WONDER WOMAN!

HER ARM IS MISSING! Weird coincidence.

Can I just say, I haven't enjoyed reading a negative critique of a comic quite that much since the glory days of the Comics Journal. (I realize that means something different depending on the person. Me, it's a good thing) Well done.

I really could not make heads or tails out of what the hell was happening but damn. to say this issue had a lot of references to Kirby's OMAC is like saying the Pacific is a bit wet. I hope they have an issue where Nemesis punches out ten guys in one shot.

Ding-Ding we have a winner !

This was the all too brief re-boot of Omac Starlin did. It was in the pages of The Warlord mostly (the first one ran in the last issue of Kamandi)

The third page of this comic shows Tom being attended by three women who all look exactly the same, and seem to act in unison. The last page shows that Tom is on some unusual planet that has three suns.

Assuming that this isn't all a dream or illusion, could Tom have somehow wound up on Carggg?

Flipped through this in the store and said to myself "Wow... this REALLY wants to be The Prisoner".

Didn't interest me. Maybe future issues will. I love Suicide Squad and Checkmate, but this... doesn't feel like either.
