It's alive!
You know how animal lovers, poets, and such go on about the love between a boy and his dog?

Doc Frankenstein, of Burlyman comics, is another retelling of the whole Monster story. Focusing on the stuff after the original book, and science/religion/myth angle, but, as you could guess from the cut text, that's not what this post is about. It's about the latest Frankenstein, Vickie, and her quite unique pet.

I'm a sucker for touching death scenes.

And resurrections, on occasion.

This last part included just because I love the hats.

First three scans from issue #3, fourth from #4, fifth from #5 and sixth from #6.

Oh gods. Dodo... in a hat.

I think this just might be one of the best things ever. Why am I not reading this book?

That might be because it's been on indefinite hold from January 2008. Someone kick Wachowskis' butts, please, and have them re-launch this already.

Also, well, the main story might not be for everyone if they're uncomfortable with blasphemy. Yahweh gets a kind of bad rap in it.

What DOESN'T Yahweh get a bad rap in?

It's a Frankendodo in a hat. I am greatly pleased.

Not, gonna lie, originally read it as "a girl and her dildo"

But this was adorable, and DODO IN A HOLMES HAT!

The deerstalker hats are adorable, but I like the way that Einstein is doing his sneaking about. He looks so... covert, like. I don't even know. But that's what makes it totally priceless, I think.

Also, I've never even read this before, but Einstein's death made me wibble a bit.

In the back of my mind, I was wibbling, but mainly I was trying to figure out how Einstein is able to fly.

I have long since stopped bothering thinking at all about physics or biology or science in general and how they relate to comic-book science. :P

Oh, God. Even though I already knew he comes back, I tear up at the death scene every single time.

Not to take away from the awesomeness and sandess of that death scene, but seriously, what the hell did she rebuild him FROM? I mean, you know, he went boom!

She's a Frankenstein. That single feather you can see in the final panel of scan #3 is plenty.

You know, there's whole DNA, brain backups, stuff, but in this instance I don't really think specifics are needed. She's a Frankenstein. That's pretty much synonymous with science beyond mortal ken, especially in the area of reanimation.

I don't think genetic memory works that way. :p

My God, this writing reads like it was done by someone who learned the English language by reading DailyKos comments.

That death scene got manly tears from me and this is my first exposure to the comic.

And seriously, Frankendodo. That alone has sold me on this comic. I needs it naow!

All right, first off - that death scene is AWESOME, as is the resurrection. The love between a pet and its owner is one seldom examined these days, which is a shame, as it is a deep and profound one. One look at a puppy's joyous exultations and tail-waggings when its owner returns home after an absence will tell you that there is genuine love there. Not simply ingrained obedience as a result of training - love, as pure in its way as that of a child for its parent. And that is why Einstein sacrificing himself out of sheer love for his mistress is terrific stuff. I didn't exactly get choked up, but I think I sniffled a bit.
And secondly - a Frankensteinian Dodo sneaking down a hallway wearing a Sherlock Holmes hat. A FRANKENSTEINIAN DODO SNEAKING DOWN A HALLWAY WEARING A SHERLOCK HOLMES HAT. This is proof that the gods love us and want us to be happy, and if someone doesn't make that into an icon, I will be severely disappointed.

WACHOWSKIS-- YOU TWO NEED TO STOP WHATEVER MOVIENESS YOU HAVE GOING ON AND CRANK OUT AT LEAST SIX MORE ISSUES OF THIS. (Or at least put out a trade so I can give it to people)

Doc Frankenstein was the book that pushed me into a comic book store for the first time. I was a huge Matrix geek and needed everything they put their hands on. Five years on, I am still here, eagerly awaiting each issue. Crazy shit like this is why I stuck with comics. Come back, you bastards >:(
