Why is Huntress back in her Jim Lee outfit?

One of the differences between the solicited version of Battle for the Cowl: The Network and the final version. Art by José Ladrönn.

From Tony Daniel's blog: "Um let's see - the Huntress I went to Jim's design for 2 reasons, the first is I feel it is sexier and she pops more. The other costume is too much black, which is fine, but in the book there's so much black already. And I like showing some skin when I can. I'm having a blast with all the female characters that I'm now getting a chance to handle. Women are easier to draw than men (for me) so I just have a great time whenever they're featured."

Yeah, I saw that earlier. Tony Daniel, keep it in your pants and the hell away from Helena.

That animation is fascinating me though.

Except they're not Daniel, you draw women with boobs that could poke an eye out, and tend to be missing a leg sometimes.

Other than that, a generally cringworthy statement which amounts to "I decided to use the Jim Lee costume because while it's fine to have Batman and replacement Batmen wearing black and a heroine who won't even be in this book long won't make a difference, I'm using this as an excuse to draw sexed up women with totally impractical costumes, even by superhero standards."

Punch to the FACE! Wahoo!

(Is that cover you've posted a bit of by Daniel? Cos if so, your men must kinda suck, mister.)

That's, like, almost everything that is wrong with this industry encapsulated in one perfectly obscene little quote. I'm almost impressed.

OK, so the dialogue is in fact Nicieza hating on his co-creator. Great! Fabulous! Just what I wanted! (I need my facepalm icon.)

Gah! Yes, yes, Huntress saves the Jim Lee costume for special occasions. You know, like cross-over stories that will hopefully be forgotten.

Too much black? It's got purple and white, and...wait, is her costume even black at all, anymore? I think it's more often drawn with all purple, plus the white vaguely cross-like bits.

On a side note, I'm really not a fan of that washed-out, splattered-paint look for covers. I'm pretty sure Tony Daniel did not do the covers we are looking at here, though.

Yeah, I like to show skin when I can. Can't do it with the male characters because nobody likes them looking foolish. But women have far less need for body armor or protection or support. Jesus.

I'm sorry. I see no mention of Huntress in this. My brain filters it out when DC people talk about her. Otherwise I might get ragey since I like the full-body suit more. Not her stripper pole wear.

First the interview where he admitted that he purposefully made Jason Rape The Dog in order to make the readers hate him, because shades of grey are bad and black-and-white is the best. Now this.

I'm quickly growing to really, really hate Tony Daniel.

Between this and Joey Q blaming sexism in comics on the readers (and Pink!) I'm about ready to stop listening entirely anytime someone in the comic industry wants to talk about women/female characters/feminism/etc...

Oh, because it's not like the costumes are revealing enough even when there's no skin showing. FFS. Can't we at least have the illusion of body armor?

Yeah. She's 'popping' all right.

You know what bugs me about these "sexy" costumes?

The boob padding. I can buy a uni-breast costume, I mean, that's how clothing works. But for something to cover the entire breast like in the green picture? That's JARRING as hell, and I can't imagine it being comfortable at all.

So far there's critiques on her boobs, outfit and skin, but what about her measurements? Just watch as her waste line is inflated and deflated in the comparison animation.

He likes "showing some skin"? Awesome. Can't wait for Nightwing to get back in the stripper-V outfit and Robin to stage a nostalgia-fueled return to the little shorts- Tim would definitely pop more with a little more lean, muscular thigh on view, don't you think?

"She pops more."

Let's see, I have two snotty remarks. I'll use them both:

"I'll say!"
"Sure does, at least twice!"

You know what'd be sexy, if you want that? Her original one. But in any case, this one is DANG fugly.

Forgetting the vile excuse for an outfit for a moment... How the hell do you go over the image again enough to entirely change the outfit only to miss every other blaring mistake made in anatomy, in some cases making it worse? What the hell? Really?! REALLY?! I mean I'm honestly disgusted by this. Her waist is just pathetic! Her boobs are two separate things(okay...) yet they are both trying to remove themselves from her body by going in different directions(omg. wtf. no.)! Overal it's just so very bad.

It's like this is telling you that you don't have to know how to draw to work in comics. Nope, no anatomy or practice for them. That's real world stuff and has no place in their titles and especially not on their covers. Brb, going to bang head against a wall until I pass out and then go cuddle Loomis and Bridgman until the pain goes away.

*glances at it again* RIBCAGES! THEY EXIST!

If you lighten up the first one, you can see the changes more clearly. As it is, the change in brightness distracts from a lot of the more depressing changes. Where'd you get the originals? I can try to adjust it.

Hmm, I think I get it, it's code:

"Um let's see - the Huntress I went to Jim's design for 2 reasons, the first is I feel it is sexier and she pops more... And I like showing some skin when I can."

equals

"The Huntress dressed like this is the one I like to wank off to."

Now I personally think Jim Lee has a decent eye for design. His costumes have unique looks, balance, nice lines, prolly cause I grew up on X-men animated. Even this hated Huntress costume, but this one is just so damn wrong for a superhero in this day and age (and arguably all before it). It's like a well designed cocktail dress, that a bussiness man wore a conference.

I think his designs worked for mutants in the 90's but Huntress isn't one. Jim Lee's designs would be great IF applied to the appropriate place, what ever that may be. Huntress needs an all new costume in a huge crossover or movie or something to replace this as the standard.
