That first generation of fandom is disappearing fast into history. They didn't have the Internet or Google or e-mail. They wrote letters to each other on paper, talked on the phone, printed up their tiny-run fanzines on ditto. Much of the Golden Age was not catalogued or annnotated; you could walk into a flea market or used book store and find a stack of old comics neither you nor any of your friends had ever heard of.
There was a freshness and sense of discovery back then that has long vanished. Old comics are still great fun, but you don't have that sense of unexpected discovery that could take a kid's breath away.
