A long, long time ago, when things were much simpler for our young mutants....
Inspired by this discussion, a look back on happier days.

From New Mutants vol 2 #2-3 (Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir, and I think either/or Keron Grant and Randy Green on art)

We first meet Julian just as Dani is bringing Sofia to Xaviers after having wrecked her father’s store and been left in jail by him for it.

The blonde girl on this page, for those who don’t remember, is Laurie Wallflower Collins. Her control over her powers at this point is... minimal, at best, and she’s something of an outcast, even at Xaviers...

... as Julian explains.

Sofia is somewhat less than impressed.

I wanted to like New Mutants, but the way they kept having Dani screw up and repeating plots...

Still better than blowing up a bus full of kids, though.

For me, it's the art on this book that really keeps me from liking it. It was nice to have an X-Book where the angst was more... relatable.

Speaking as someone who really enjoyed this book, motto. They just could not get a reliable artist for anything. I think they went through something like...what? Eleven artists in two years?

Michael Ryan's run on this book was very nice, though.

This book was the first time I ever remember going "wait, this art is bad. What happened?"

Wallflower. Tag. Dryad. DJ. Quill.

This series was so good and had so much potential.

I wanted to like this series more than I could. Sofia is a case in point, she already had such extraordinary control over her powers before she got there, it was hard to see her as any sort of trainee (though her relationship with her father was interesting)

Seriously, reassembling the dozens of blocks of a Jenga tower using air control? Knowing how to affect people's inner ear?

I can't remember what it was that drove me from this series. Art? Too many mutants? The story with mutie-hater/healer guy? Didn't like the way it dealt with old New Mutants?

I did like Sofia though. It was just for her that I picked up New Warriors.

This book was so good until crossovers and new creative teams turned it into just another X-Book. I loved that the kids had actual teen angst, not "mutant angst".
