Corps 101: The Star Sapphires
Although this is the penultimate profile from the Corps 101 series posted on DC's The Source, we've already seen the layout for the Black Lanterns that they are going to post tomorrow.

Today's feature is, obviously, the Star Sapphires of the Violet light.

It seems only Carol and Fatality have the weird/ slutty costume. The others are sexy, but a bit more classy. I like them.

I wonder who the "Lost Sapphire" is? I recognize the name "Dela Pharon": was she the one that got killed by the Spectre? I have no idea if Miss Bloss or Race are established characters. Too bad they didn't show Star Sapphire Kryb :(

I AM a little sad at the lack of males. I know Ethan Van Sciver said that he hoped there would be male Violet Lanterns because he thinks excluding them is sending the message that men cannot be connected to Love, which is untrue. Also, while he's unsure of how they'd adapt the sexy costume for a male wearer, he bets he could do it. Did someone say "convention commission"?

You know, if they insist on this being GIRLS ONLY BOYS STAY OUT Corps, they could at least explain it away as the sexism of the Zamarons.

Knowing Johns, though, he probably just takes love and pink violet means GURLS for granted.

I guess it has been hinted at, because the reason why the Zamarons splintered was due to the Guardians not embracing emotion. At the time, the Guardians were all male. I'd like them to be called out on it, though, if they aren't going to have any men around.

I gotta go this direction too. It's not that those not recruited for a particular corps aren't capable of a strong link with X, it's that those running the show for each corps has very specific goals in their recruiting, so the Oans look for people with a strong sense of justice, the Zamarons are biased towards women, and Sinestro's not interested in recruiting a good-guy yellow lantern.

Remove the bra-cups, folded boots, think 'Barbarian' and '1940s SF hero' and you've got it.

Deborah Darnell is the one that was killed by the Spectre (and was in the Secret Society of Super-Villains back in the day).

Dela Pharon is another Star Sapphire from the planet Xanador that first showed up in a 1965 story (Green Lantern #41) as a rival for Carol Ferris.

Is she the 1940's one who was shown to be afraid of men in the GL/Flash Brave and the Bold?

Well, unsurprisingly, the costume looks better in hands other than Benes', which is something, I guess.

I'd mind them all being female a lot less (though I'd still mind it) if they weren't all mammals, though. If you know what I mean. -_-

Agreed. Though this is just a sample of their ranks. They could have a giant crustacean woman for all we know.

I thought Cowgirl was Earth's Star Sapphire.

Hmmm... so would her Bizarro, Earth-3, or Antimatter counterpart be "Reverse Cowgirl?"

I thought Cowgirl was Earth's Star Sapphire.

No, the crystal on Cowgirl jumped ship to a Zamaron when Hal kissed the Zamaron. This was before the Zamarons decided to get their own corps.

Y'know why is it i'm getting the feeling that Carol Ferris is going to die? In Atrocitus's prophecy, he foresaw Hal rebelling against the Guardians for taking "something of grave importance" from him? My bet is that the Guardians deluded campaign against the other Corps will cost Carol her life, and she'll give Hal her ring so that he can do the White Lantern thing at the end of Blackest Night. (and plus pretty sure Johns wants Hal with Cowgirl, cuz he created her and all)

Maybe they kill Ollie?

Though the use if "grave importance" suggests they're going to pre-empt the zombie lanterns in some way by desecrating someone's grave.

You know, my suspension of disbelief can take a lot of stuff, especially in a cosmic superhero setting. But I cannot believe that Carol Ferris, a strong, no-nonsense businesswoman who has mostly been very well-grounded, would fly around the universe in that particular outfit. I hope the Zamarons put a mental whammy on her again to join their corps, because sheesh.

Also, the "lost Sapphire" could either be Deborah Camille Darnelle, the Sapphire who was with the Secret Society of Superheroes and whom the Spectre apparently killed in Infinite Crisis, OR it could be the golden age Star Sapphire, a Jay Garrick villainess from another dimension whom Mark Waid tied in with the Zamarons in his Brave and the Bold miniseries.

Dude what I think is even worse is how Johns felt the need to have Carol be hoplessly in love with Hal Jordan; so much so that she was basically "waiting on him" while he was dead and just wasn't "alive" till he came back in her life. Divorces her husband (who she seemingly had a good marriage with) and everything all because Hal is back.

It would've showed GREAT matuirity on John's part had he had Carol as the older, former love interest (whose happily married but still innocently flirts with Hal) who is a close friend of Hal and is there to give him a mature, human perspective on things.

I would like there to be male Star Sapphires, but I'm having a hard time picturing their costumes. Every time I think of it, I think "male stripper." With purple manties. With a star on the crotch. And a domino mask.

So basically like the bad guy from Busou Renkin.

I still don't think the Zamarons are the ones who should be controlling "love", considering how big a mess up Star Sapphire has been in the past.
