Mary Marvel leads the parade

I have always had a fondness for WW II morale-builder covers, especially the ones which show Americans of different types uniting to work together, Reminds me of the last election. This WOW COMICS cover is a favorite, although I would prefer it without the comic-relief goofball. The art is probably Mark Swayze. Something about Mary's costume just works so well, and it was always funny to see this demure little girl casually rip car doors off or slap giant monsters senseless.. the contrast between her appearance and her actions was great.

See? This is the Mary Marvel I know and love. Cute and fun and sweet and nice... but she was never really as dull as people made her out to be, because she wouldn't hesitate to beat the shit out of her enemies.

I'm still miffed with Super Bondage Leather Princess Mary Marvel, because the Marvel family was, in my opinion, one of the last bastions of just good, old-fashioned fun in the increasingly dark and mopey shit that's taken over comics recently. Because they were kids. Regular old American kids. They weren't rejects from bloody Degrassi Street, and that was why I liked them so much.

Exactly. I dunno what the fuck is up with DC and the editors. That have NO idea how to use the Marvel family.

The good news is that issues of WOW COMICS, MARY MARVEL and THE MARVEL FAMILY still exist, where DC cannot ruin or tarnish them. Copyright holders can do whatever they want to versions of characters, sometimes good but usually atrocious; but they can't hurt this, the real Mary Marvel. She is beyond their reach.

Well, there is that.

But still, I'd like to see some recent sunniness coming from the Marvel family. The only characters who are fun and silly anymore are the new Blue Beetle and sometimes Miss Martian (who's got that dumb evil-personality thing going, and I fear for her).

There's always Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam At least BB Mary is more fun than current DC Mary.

WWII art always hits me. Even 65 years later, it's still so powerful. I have read books on WWII propaganda posters and they still work. It must be the times.

Americans of different types uniting to work together
And by that, you mean all the white ones, presumably...

No, I certainly did not. Did you see the issue of ALL-STAR COMICS where a black worker is up on stage alongside the JSA, the farmers and nurses and servicemen? Or where the American-born Japanese helps the Atom out?
