Tigra/Hood rematch?

This is from Newsarama's coverage of Marvel's Dark Reign Panel at FX International.

Starting with issue #26, it will be the new Initiative under Norman Osborne, the Hood and the Taskmaster. Gage said he liked the fact that he got to pull out a lot of villains from big name guys, but at the same time, he got to search for obscure villains who weren’t in the handbooks – such as Johnny Guitar and Dr. Sax from the old Dazzler books. Gage said the fun part is writing the villains when they are put into a position where they have to act like heroes. What does a naturally selfish person do when they are put in a position where they have to save lives and risk their own lives in the process? I like exploring what happens to heroes and villains when the roles are switched. And for anyone who remembers when Tigra got a beating from the Hood, Christos said to pay attention, because now the shoe is on the other foot! “She’s coming out of the refrigerator, scratching, clawing, biting – been using my cat as research,” Christos joked, but McCann was quick to add that no cats were harmed in the making of Christos’ book.

	Absolutely! I've long wondered how Marvel could get that so wrong for so long. I mean come on, Tigra is a were-freaking-tiger, how hard is that to make badass? It almost writes itself. If a werewolf is scary badass, and a tiger is ten times deadlier than any wolf, well you do the math. This shouldn't be that hard to figure out. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Yeah, and in the feline world the females are deadlier than the males. A simple fact of biology you'd think would be plain. When is the comic world gonna catch up to the video game world and put more females front and center, I wonder? You'd think the same principle would apply, wanting to look at an attractive female form instead of half-naked males. (Reply to this) (Parent)

	In my mind that scene was definitely a fridging. I mean it's interesting to hear it called that from an actual writer at Marvel, instead of him dancing around it or dismissing the criticism. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	I personally remember a big kerfuffle (not just when the scans were posted on S_D 1.0, but on the feminist comic blosgosphere as well). YMMV. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I think it was more... the feminist blogosphere was like "whut, again? fer cripes' sake, Marvel" and was prepared to move on, but for some reason the fanboys got particularly riled about defending that one (I remember Bendis actually put out a whole incredibly inane, idiotic statement about fish-people very early on in the debacle) and so the snap-back to that denial got quite nasty. I came in about halfway through, though, not having been an Avengers reader at the time, so that impression may not be accurate.

	Hmm. I thought that Newsarama and others were surprised there wasn't that much of a "kerfuffle." I wonder what the "feminist comic blosgosphere" said. IMHO, Bendis wasn't to make the Hood look like a badass at the expense of a character he didn't really like. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Well, using the term isn't the same as admitting that it's a genuine problem. The way Gage is talking here, I can believe that he perceives her to have been mistreated, but that doesn't mean that the general Marvel braintrust agrees; knowing "the fans call it a fridging when we beat gratuitously on a female character" and joking about that in an interview doesn't automatically translate to knowing "gratuitous abuse of female characters is problematic and we should stop." Just because an atheist knows the language of Christianity enough to use a phrase like "oh, this chocolate is heaven" doesn't mean he actually believes in an afterlife.

I guess I'm not articulating myself well tonight, but that was what I trying to acknowledge when I said "I know he's being humorous" in my original comment. A crack about his cat clawing out of a fridge is far from a serious statement about Tigra and whether the scene was misogynist or not, but it's not a term I've heard used much by actual writers/creators. (Which could either indicate it's impact or it's devaluation, depending on how you look at it.)

	I don't think it's even the beating that matters the Hood's torn down a bunch of good Marvel heroes already. The fact it was done so blatantly and that people couldn't even tell if she was alive is the problem to me. (Reply to this)
