So VD is apparently a single, easily cured disease? Awesome.

I'm kind of impressed by the handling of the topic of homosexuality, though, given the time period.

Copyright is either '74 or '76. kinda hard to tell in the blurryness. This was before Herpies and AIDS were in the national thought processes. Around then, they *were* for the most part curable.

I guess it's progressive for its time, but shit. It basically tells you that someone might NOT be gay if they seem gay and that YOU AREN'T gay just because you have gay feelings.

So, if you're a gay youth reading this, you're either too fucked up to even mention or you're wrong about your own feelings.

I love how the bad guy has "Galactic Conquest" on his mirror--has he been reading "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill?

Every time I see this comic, I can't help but think: Who in the hell takes advice on sex from a guy with a head the size of a basketball? Yeah, like HE'S ever had sex before.

Well no wonder Guy Gardner jumped ship to DC -- look what Marvel did to him! They made him wear bellbottoms and horrible platform shoes and cast him as a sleazemonster! DC offered him a Green Lantern power ring, a pair of kick-ass boots and even let him make his favorite jacket into part of his costume! Yeah, it's no wonder Guy's refused to work for Marvel ever again.

This isn't what I hoped for when I read "Spider-man vs. The Prodigy"

This comic always makes me grin like a loon-- but one thing, HOW old are these kids supposed to be? They look like high school, but the girl says "the junior high kids say" as if she hasn't experienced it yet and doesn't know what kind of videos they see for sex-ed... O__O

But anyway, yay for Spider-Man + Planned Parenthood

The sad part is, as goofy as this story is the actual information packet is far more accurate than the right-wing "abstinence only" propaganda that schools have been pushing since Bush took office. Even more ironic is that studies have proven definitively that that form of agenda-driven sex ed has led to an increase in teen pregnancy and STD infection rates AND includes some of the myths debunked in this very packet. It's almost as if--

--no way... you think? Bush being a green-skinned space alien dork with an evil agenda would certainly explain a lot...

Yep, talking to two of the local high school teachers, they think sex education has been knocked back more than a few steps. Maybe with a new regime, this is one more mess since 2001 that they'll try to correct.

If someone published a big anthology of these type of PSA comics, I would buy it so hard. I would buy the heck out of it.

Interestingly enough, the Prodigy's plan here actually makes sense - he's trying to get kids to stay on his retreats and have hot monkey love so they'll get pregnant, and he'll then ship the resulting rugrats off to Intellectia as slave labor. So basically he's a slave farmer. As this kind of plan goes, it makes sense - which makes it practically unique for this sort of comic. I don't know HOW many of these things I've read have villains who are only there to make a point - I read an anti-smoking one once where Spidey, Storm and Power Man went up against the evil Smoke Screen! And what was the evil Smoke Screen's plan? Why, he was a mob boss, and he planned to get a high school track star hooked on cigarettes so he'd lose the upcoming race AND THE MOB COULD BET AGAINST HIM! That was his big plan, his path to fame and glory. Oh yeah, THAT makes sense. To be fair, SS LOOKED awfully cool - he had a big purple cloak, and was constantly surrounded by billows of thick gray smoke, which made for an interesting visual - but the man just couldn't deliver.

I wonder why a guy looking this way with green skin was any more trustworthy pink--I mean, there's not that much difference...

Also: third page, last panel--obviously this was a bit rushed through the production process. Check out the editor's note inside the guy's dialogue balloon. (Or maybe it's a tribute to the Alberto issues of CRUSADERS--they read kind of like that)

Actually, scratch that. The whole thing reads like an extended Hostess ad; it just kind of has that sound to it.
