Superman/Madman Hullabaloo! part 1
I've said in comments before that Madman Atomic Comics (Image) is the only ongoing series on my pull-list. Mike Allred's an amazing artist, but as a storyteller he has unprecedented Silver Age sensibilities (read: crack). It's a really fun time and I'd definitely recommend everyone check it out, along with the earlier series, Madman Comics (Dark Horse) and The Atomics (AAA Pop!), both of which are available in trade.
Anyway, recently (like, earlier tonight) I finally added a second title to my pull list: Superman/Batman. I am never looking back. To celebrate, I give you the time both worlds met, 1997's three issue Superman/Madman Hullabaloo, written and drawn by Mike Allred, with colors by the lovely Laura Allred.
NOTE TO MODS: Comparing the .cbr I have to my hardcopy of the issue, due to some inexplicably missing pages and a couple backup previews, it turns out the book's 32 pages, so I posted 10 pages. This being my first scans post, if I'm doing anything wrong, feel free to let me know!
Since the mini's dual-published by DC and Dark Horse, the first six pages catch the readers who picked it up for Superman up on who Frank Einstein is. This makes it a really good starting point for new Madman readers, but I don't have enough pages to put them up here, so we'll just skip right in to the story.
Oh my!
MadSupes crashes the rocket and finds to his surprise that he's bleeding and feel suddenly weaker. SuperFrank finds to his surprise that he wasn't killed or even really hurt by the fall. Seeing Metropolis in the distance, he decides to head there, taking Hamilton's robot arm with him. Then this happens.
Well, this will take some getting used to.
SuperFrank comes up on a gas station on the outskirts of the city. The attendant mistakes him for Superman, but only for a second, asking "You aren't 'sperimenting with a new look again, are you?" He then fills SuperFrank in on Metropolis and Superman, and lets him use the washroom to freshen up.
While MadSupes is catching his bearings, Joe, Dr. Flem and Mott head to wear the rocket crashed to find Frank. Needless to say, they're both a little surprised at the meeting. MadSupes is trying not to be a dick, but it's understandable that he's a little panicky.
D'awwww. Poor Frank, not having any memories from before he was reanimated, really wouldn't have ever seen himself with a normal face. His reaction is adorable. With doubled confidence, he struts into the city.
Is that a visual gag referring to Conner? Come to think of it, SuperFrank's costume is a lot like Conner's original one, minus the jacket and with a few colors changed. And the emblem, of course.
MadSupes and the gang return to Dr. Flem's lab. Supes makes an aside about a good friend of his that likes to spend his time in caves, too. :) They start planning a way to set things right.
Meanwhile, SuperFrank fills Lois in on what's gone down as far as he knows. Along the way, the find out at just about the wrong time that SuperFrank can't quite fly. They come out of it okay, and see a couple cops chasing an armed robber, revealed to be Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink. :D
Mr. Pink runs out in front of a car, which hits him head-on, hard enough to dent severely.
Miraculously, he gets up!
DUN DUN DUNNNN
Will SuperFrank make it out okay?
Will MadSupes ever get home?
What's Mr. Pink's deal?
Will Professor Hamilton ever get his arm back?
Did that building just sprout legs?!
Find out in part two!
