Call for Volunteers: Tag Wranglers
[info]sir_razorback has been helping us maintain the tags but there have been some, er... absolutely mangled posts. We're looking for one or two volunteers to help out with this most thankless of tasks: tag wrangling. We're looking for an ongoing commitment, but if at any time you're bored of wrangling, let us know and we'll sell you back your soul.

What: fix mistagged posts, identify tags for deletion and renaming
When: while you browse the comm
Reward: our undying gratitude

* Obviously we still expect you (the comm at large) to tag your own posts, and to help out with untagged posts when the urge strikes.

Um. Do we have sufficient tagging convention at this point to begin seriously tag wrangling? There still seems to be a lot of dissension in the ranks about things like whether or not numerals are called for with any given title, who qualifies as a Batman, how many identities need to be identified, who's a Cass and who's a Cassandra, what categories should be called (is the JLA a group or team, and is it the JLA, the Justice League, or the Justice League of America? What about the JLI?), whether categories are needed for everything ("in-joke" and the like), and whether we can still be fun and freewheeling like we were back in the good old days of "ocelots don't work that way."

Of course you can have "ocelots don't work that way" tags. But we can't have sixteen different tags for one character. Which we actually DO have right now. Roman numerals are still a go, and we'll work out the hinky ones on a case by case basis. I'm not interested in writing a rule book for tagging Batmans, because at the end of the day, I can just rename the misfires, and we have to let some things go. I don't want to bury the comm in rules.

Step one will be cleaning up the mess that we've made in what, two months?

Step two will be making things a bit clearer. But in all honesty, I don't expect the tags to ever be perfectly organized.

And I should add that part of being a tag wrangler would be helping to make those decisions about the suitability and usefulness of tags and tag categories.

Fair enough. I'll pitch in, then, if y'like, though fair warning, I'm about ten times more useful with DC than Marvel.

LJ has a limitation of 1000 tags - does IJ have a similar limitation?

[info]bariman1987

As far as I know, it doesn't. The LJ tag limit was imposed due to server slowdown or something like that, which isn't a problem with IJ.

Can we take this opportunity to get rid of the char: creator: title: etc: thing? It's kind of needlessly complicated and makes searching more difficult IMO.

It can get annoying typing it in, but it does make it easier for searching for the actual Batman comic, without having to wade through every post that features Batman.

I actually like the char:, creator:, title:, etc. What I don't like is the Civilian Name/Costume I/One-Shot Alias IV/Eventually Takes Up Whatever Mantle MCCCXXXVII

Not only is it needlessly long, but they'll eventually wind up outdating themselves, as once someone gets a new title, either we ignore it for purposes of tagging, the old posts sit unlinked from the new ones, or someone goes back and updates all the old tags (which is going to get daunting for the more prolific characters if it isn't already)

Doesn't help when so and so decides to take up a new identity for a short while, yes..But people looking for all Hal Jordan posts should see the posts that include him as the Spectre, fer instance. Whereas people looking for Green Lantern/Hal Jordan really don't want to.

Someone (wish I could remember who. Credit where credit is due and all that) had proposed the solution in a previous mod post to simply separate civilian names and costume names where it made sense to do so. So, to use your example, we'd have "char:Green Lantern" to search for GLs (be it Hal, Kyle, Guy, John, whoever as long as they have a green ring at the time) and "char:Hal Jordan" to search for Hal (whether he's GL, Spectre, or rainbow lantern at the time).

I wish I could say you could then search the GL tag and Hal tag together to find instances of Hal as a Green Lantern, but it seems searching multiple tags is additive, not subtractive. Way to go, LJ/IJ.

I would, but I won't.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; seriously, I don't "browse" this place. I treat it like a webcomic that I'm catching up on, and I rarely look back, unless I've actually made a comment about something.

Like I already told Rabican, I can't help with tag-wrangling anymore. Lost my job recently and I need to focus my time on jobsearching. I spend too much time on S/D as it is. =p It's been about three weeks since the last time I was able to do a tag-sweep.

Good luck with the search! :)

Here's abit of prespective about just how fast these things are breeding.

S/D 2.0 has been up since the end of February. We haven't even been back two full months yet.

We should also have some bonus tags. For example, what if someone posts fanart along with the scans? Or a video? Or Icon UK's commissions. We had an advertisement tag, so that makes some sense.
